How old are the people saying this? Because I was taught about Helen Keller's life as a child and adult in school.

Second, yikes in the eugenics, but that's textbook internalized ableism and I don't understand why that can't be discussed or analyzed?

It's less that it can't be discussed and more that you're never going to see a lot of inspiring media about Helen Keller's adulthood the way you do about her childhood because the eugenics stuff kills the mood.

Also, internalized ableism played less of a role than you'd think. Getting meningitis wasn't considered a genetic failing. The eugenics movement was unfortunately just very popular at the time. Moreover, there were (and still are) factions of the communist movement that saw eugenics as an essential component of communism.
