How so?

If you just HAVE to inteject in any discussion about a topic about how ~problematique~ the creator/the media is, it solves exactly nothing in the long run. Most people are aware. Someone being a virtue signalling Debbie Downer about it won't magically make a fan anti HP fandom, it just means they won't talk to that person anymore eventually.

No, that's just called being annoying.

It's only virtue signaling if you cry about transphobia, and then do nothing else, or worse, continue to support JKR anyway because you just *can't* not have your HP fix. You're making the assumption that the first anon isn't taking any effective action of their own when it comes to supporting trans rights.

Also, they're right. Your analogy doesn't work. It assumes the people who make your food are the same ones causing or at least contributing to a famine crisis in Africa, and equates enjoying fictional content with basic needs. Sure, reading is important, but you die without food.

Yes, it is virtue signaling. Because it's basically saying "Uuuh, look at me and how woke (for lack of a better term) I am because I just HAVE to mention this fact everyone knows every time the topic of HP comes up".

And considering a lot of western food sources are based around exploiting third world countries it's not actually too far fetched. Someone eating a quinoa bowl? "Pity quinoa being so trendy puts a strain of its availability for indigineous people". Someone eating a steak? - Every holier than though vegan talking point. The analogy with food works.
