Neither Star Wars nor the MCU is primarily aimed at men. I think if I had to pick a better example, I'd say the Fast&The Furious movies fit the bill much better and they (and other male centered media) get called trashy plenty. Difference is they don't really pretend not to be.

Come to think of it, if we're actually talking about the sub category of smutty trash in particular, I can't even think of a single example of a similar show like Bridgerton aimed primarily at straight men. So on the same level, there isn't actually anything to compare.

There's a ton of lewd anime aimed at straight guys, and I have yet to encounter one that pretends to be anything other than what it is. That kind of show is always pretty straight up about being sexy trash.

DA

Yep. Same with lewd games. Any action game with heroine with big ol titties and tiny short skirt. It doesn't pretend.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-09 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but anime also has the added stigma of, well, anime attached to it. I really struggle to think of an acted TV show that's primarily smutty trash targeted at straight men. Plenty of shows have some smut that's often more male-gazey (like GoT) but it's not exactly a light entertainment smutty show.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I think the GoT show was absolute fucking trash aimed at men that was treated as better than it actually was because there was violence alongside the smut. Like there was that whole shit-ass brothel scene where a whore is being fingered while Littlefinger was expositing and That was meant to be good writing??? Pull the other one.

Finally, someone feels the same way I do!

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
It was dogshit and everyone treated it like it was High Quaity TV, which I think shows OPs point: dude aimed media gets not only a pass when it’s trash but elevated into not being somehow good when it isn’t.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, most action movies don't pretend to be anything more than what they are, a 1.5 hour romp full of guns or people punching each other. The ones that do try to be more than that and fail get laughed at.

"You know Jason Statham plays Jason Statham in every Jason Statham movie?" Yes, duh. That's why I'm watching it.

They really, really are. Just because women like them as well does not change the fact that they are considered to have men as their primary audience.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They definitely are.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Lmao what? Of course those properties are aimed at men, sure women can like the too but that doesn’t change who the target audience is. Like I fucking love monster movies but they’re still aimed at men.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-09 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Not remotely to the extent Bridgerton is aimed at women.

I think that’s largely part of the broader societal tendency towards male-as-default. Things aimed at “general audiences” can have plenty of stereotypically male-focused aspects without marketing being afraid of scaring off female audiences. It’s not as true in the other direction, which I think actually leads to more specifically targeted female-focused marketing, since they’re already considered to be counting out the male audience.

And neither do romance shows or romcoms but fuck knows people act like they do and pick them to death. Like how on earth do you see a TV show that has classical renditions of pop songs and somehow come to the idea that its tongue is not firmly placed in its check? It’s like it needs a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen going ‘this TV show is not high art’ in order for some of you to understand this as a concept that you’ll readily accept for dude-targeted action movies.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Not for nothing but I had more than one person recommend Bridgerton to me while acting like it WAS high art, so.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah same. That or how it was such amazing commentary on racism by doing all the race swaps. Up to the point of actually believing there was historical fact about it. Which is also on some of the actors/showrunners though but damn.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
And I’ve seen plenty who don’t, almost like the fans aren’t a monolith or something. Shocking I know.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna be real even if they do think it’s better than it is, who cares? It’s nothing hurting anyone.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 11:08 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody said it's hurting anyone, ayrt just replied to a comment alleging nobody thinks Bridgerton is better than it is.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Reading that comment the person is clearly talking about the show, not the audience. And yeah a lot of romance stuff is very aware of what it is.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 12:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno about you but I do not see people constantly acknowledging that the F&F movies are trash for justify being into them. If anything it’s just readily accepted that they’re not serious and people are watching them for fun. But the moment romance stuff enters the chat suddenly those into that are not being given the same grace and are in fact treated like they’re stupid and don’t know that what they like is silly and must be reminded every time they’re having fun with it.
