Would you Want to Know?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
So today I saw a guy with his overshirt worn inside out. I wanted to say something but I was too shy. Would you prefer being told by a stranger or realizing yourself/told by someone you knew after going home?

I'd rather be told personally.

True, I assumed this would be the majority answer. I kept wanting to stand up to get the guys attention, but my brain kept giving me reasons to keep quiet.

On one hand I would find it more embarrassing if someone told me, but I'd be more relieved to know. If I only realized after coming home I would maybe have more of a laugh about it, but be embarrassed I walking all day with it inside out. So I'm not sure.

This is funny you mention because I went to jury duty today (we got off the ONE trial was called off_ and as soon as i get home I notice my shirt (one of my good interview polos) has been inside out the whole time.

So embarrassing but it does back up the claims i made on the questionnaire that I have concerns about my ability to serve seeing as I'm a hot mess and can't drive for medical reasons. Also my handwriting was like dear GOD...

Ah, no! Though that silver lining is pretty great at the end of the day.
The only time I got called into jury duty was right when I turned 18, I was actually excited but like literally everyone I knew just looked at me and said "bad idea". Nothing progressed past the initial letter luckily, so I didn't end up sending any innocents to jail. Here's hoping there'll be no callbacks for you too!

Lol yeah. Also tbf I'm like half medicated right now. So i probably barely had to put in an explanation, as much as walk in. Be me be a mess and they can just look at me and go

"Yeaaaah. Noooooo"

I had it last year, and this guy who quite likely murdered his girlfriend was set free. But there was reasonable doubt. Do I think he did it? Probably, BUT there was enough doubt that I didn't want to send him to the pen for what would probably have been the rest of his life. It was difficult, quite the experience. I do feel bad that this woman didn't have justice, but again, I didn't feel strongly enough of his guilt to send him to prison.

I would rather know. It would definitely be awkward to be told by a stranger, but less awkward than getting home and thinking of the countless strangers who saw it without me knowing something was wrong. I think if you approach them with a smile and are kind they'd be thankful and receptive.

Yeah, I was in a waiting room when he walked in to talk to the receptionist. I kept telling myself to catch his attention on his way out but my brain was DETERMINED to convince me I'd be the first person in history to somehow insult the man in five seconds of conversation.

In theory yes, although it depends on who's telling me and how they approach it. I'm a woman and have done this for other women I don't know just passing on the sidewalk, but I'd hesitate to do the same for a random man, and would probably feel weird if a guy approached me about a wardrobe malfunction.

That was one of the things that held me up a bit. He was a youngish guy and while I'm older than I look, my brain just kept making it into this weird big thing.

I've always heard that you should always tell them if they can fix it within 5 minutes.

That is actually a very good point! lol, I can just imagine somehow getting my pants inside out, or having something go wrong with my bra and just not being able to do anything short of going home or finding a place to change. Now that would suck.

I'd figure the ultimate goal is to have the fewest amount of people see whatever it is you find embarrassing, so I'd always say something / want to be told.

Re: Would you Want to Know?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, especially since it would have been such an easy fix. Next time I'm definitely going to try and find the courage to say something. Even if I somehow make a mess of it, at least I meant well.

I always tell coworkers their clothing tags are out and correct it for them if they want it done. I've had people tap me on the shoulder and tell me my dress or skirt is tucked into the back of my bike shorts (the whole reason I wear bike shorts). I would rather be told.

Re: Would you Want to Know?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! At the time I completely drew a blank on when the last time I was told/told someone, even though I know it's happened to me, but I'll definitely speak up next time. At this point I'm sure I've thought about it more than he probably has!

I would, yes. Because then I could presumably duck into a bathroom and correct the problem.

Yeah, I think I'd rather be told.

With that said, one summer a few years ago I was wearing a neon-colored bralette under a button-up top, and I had the button-up top undone low enough that the bralette was visible. It was a fairly full-coverage bralette. A guy passing by me on the street told me my shirt was unbuttoned, which I very much did NOT appreciate, even though he thought he was doing me a favor. (Or maybe he was just trying to shame me into covering up, that's possible. I didn't get that vibe from him, though, I think he just honestly thought I'd slipped a button.)

Yeah, I would mention it, but sotto voce/discreetly.

If it's that easy to fix I'd like the heads-up-- yeah, it might be a little embarrassing/awkward, but the sooner I get the chance to fix it, the better, and I'd be grateful to the person who gave me a heads-up.
