I feel like one particular aspect of true crime content is misunderstood by people who dislike it - that attention on specific cases or mysteries are often welcomed by the victim's friends and families.

Why? Because when an investigation is ongoing or has gone cold, raising awareness about it can make a huge difference. That's why rewards are offered for info, that's why billboards are put up, that's why families agree to be interviewed for TV, documentaries or podcasts about this awful thing that happened. They know that bringing attention to it might be the key to solving it and finding justice for their loved ones.

Yeah, every family must hope they can be the next In Your Own Backyard or season 2 of In The Dark.

I'm not familiar with those shows, but assuming that OP means the absolute worst examples of true crime doesn't seem like a good faith interpretation.

Those are the absolute best outcomes of a true crime show. Increased awareness and solved crimes.

That's good then.

If the victim's friends and families could choose this, then yeah, I would agree. And I know there are (and always have been) some creators who do in fact focus on that. But that's by FAR not the majority, especially as the most "popular" crimes are generally ones that are getting attention anyway because the victim fits a particular profile.

most of the true crime I see pass my dash or advertised for cable shows is not for unsolved crimes. not every "true crime" is Unsolved Mysteries.

I agree, and have no objection to people who make shows etc where the families are working with them or happy for the attention and coverage. But there are a lot of people who are 100% unethical, and do not care if the families like it or not, and in fact do not even care if their facts and reporting is accurate. They just want money.

I love when true crime videos and podcasts do that, too. But I think what people often see are the ones who don't. The creators who do makeup while talking about the worst days of some family's lives.

on the one hand i get what you mean but on the other idk maybe I'm just a total fidgeter so i can't imagine talking while doing NOTHING.

Although some of them have done some sus stuff , i remember when ones i watched were smaller and seemed very genuine. I remember one was usually always very respectful of victims and so in the Lululemon murder case when she brought up the one "victim's" theft habits I felt like that was kinda off but then.... when the truth was uncovered..

"oh . now it makes sense".

( GOODAMN though imagine risking committing MURDER over overpriced yoga pants when the store apparently already gives you credits or something to get their clothes. I walked in that store ONCE out of curiosity to check the prices. found a sports bra priced at $50 and then walked out like "I am TOO BROKE for this store clearly)

to be clear the victim in quotes i mentioned turned out to have been the killer The other ones was dead and well she tried passing this bogus break in story that didn't add up and .. yeah

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, those kind of turn my stomach, I won't lie.

I don't watch true crime content where it feels like the creator is glorifying it or wallowing in their enjoyment. Looking at you, My Favorite Murder!

The name of that podcast alone is enough to ensure that I'll never listen to it.

A false hope they often have no say in, and not all of them agree it brings hope at all. You can like true crime but don't pretend it's anything else but what it is.
