Exactly! So many people just had dedicated websites for their interests, usually a specific series or ships. But forums were ideal, imo, any sort of anti was generally overwhelmed by people who wanted to be there and mods were involved in the community and generally cut any real problems short, we had profiles but they weren't connected to our face and life like so many people today do.
idk, the way they were set up just allowed conversation the way today doesn't. The algorithm just gets too many people, and it's so annoying to navigate nowadays. The scrolling and binging just seems to invite the come-and-go relationship and I have such a hard time interacting with that.
