This fucking movie. The thing is, I didn't like it. I thought it was pretentious and boring.
But for me it became one of those movies like American Psycho there I judge person's opinion on it. No, Christian didn't cheat, he was raped. No, the cult didn't kill only "rude" peoole, they killed non-white couple whom just wanted out. Even horror movie logic and all the revenge plots don't make the ending good ending - Dani was indoctrinated into cult.

Technically, everyone killed by the cult had disrespected their traditions in some way. The British couple caused a scene at the ättestupa ceremony (completely understandable because it was culturally shocking to them; and the cult members who hadn't prepared them beforehand paid with their lives as well). I think they were killed more for disturbing the ceremony than for wanting out.

Tbf yeah, you are right. I think it just have different gravitas from a horror trope view.

That's another thing that gets me - some people try to spin the ending as this weird feminist empowerment scene when actually, it's the culmination of a woman getting love bombed, manipulated and having her emotional distress weaponised against her.

That final shot showing her smile. Soooo good. A horror movie with a truly horrific ending. *chef's kiss*

AYRT!
Exactly!

Some people including the writer and director of the movie apparently. Though at least he also admitted it's supposed to be an over-the-top cathartic revenge fantasy.
