[Image of social media post from the Seattle Opera: Use promo code TIMOTHEE to save 14% off select seats for Carmen this weekend only! Comment: Seattle Opera just won the #timotheeOpera debacle]

I am LIVING to watch Timothee Chalamet get dragged over his comments on ballet and opera. I hope this tanks his Oscar chances. /petty

It looks like Michael B. Jordan is going to win for Best Actor and not Wagner Moura or Chamalamadingdong.

Dumbest controversy ever. He didn't even say anything false.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. He seems like such a smug, self-important twat who is high from sniffing his own farts.

I've seen references to this but I have no idea what's going on. Can someone give me the tea?

It was from an interivew.

"I admire people, and I've done it myself, who go on a talk show and go, 'Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. You know, we gotta keep this genre alive,' " he said. "And another part of me feels like, if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they're going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it."

The conversation eventually turned to other art forms, prompting Chalamet to make an offhanded remark about ballet and opera.

"I don't want to be working in ballet or opera, or you know, things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive,' even though it's like, no one cares about this anymore," he said, drawing laughter from both McConaughey and the crowd.

In my view, he said nothing wrong. He was saying he doesn't want to see movies go the way of ballet and opera which ARE dying art forms. If people DID care about ballet/opera, they wouldn't be seeing the insanely low numbers they have.

I just don't think you can compare ballet and opera to "all films." They have a smaller audience, but so do more highbrow films versus obvious blockbuster-style movies.

Anyway, I think Timothee's pornstache is ugly and he's dating a trashy Jenner, so I don't care for him for those reasons and not really this quote in particular.

On one hand, I do believe he has a point - most people aren't going out to see ballet and opera (I say this as someone who does). But on the other hand, he comes off as such an airheaded asshole in every interview I see of him that it makes me mad anyway.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It's all about tone, really. "Opera and ballet are dying industries that are no longer popular and people always seem to be struggling to keep them alive" is the same information without "haha like, no1 curr".

Not an opera or ballet fan but it's not new info that they're dying out, so the only thing we learn from that remark is Chalamet continues to be an airheaded asshole, I guess

Ultimately it has nothing to do with his Oscar chances because voting was already closed by the time the interview dropped

(Anonymous) 2026-03-14 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC the interview was in late February and the clip blew up on the last days of voting.

People aren't going to ballets and operas because society is becoming poorer and dumber as the years pass on. They are watching influencers, mukbang videos, and learning incorrect things about Israel from TikTok. They're not reading or buying high-quality literature either. If they bother seeing a movie with Timothee Chalamet in it, it's because they think he's cute, not because they think his acting is amazing.
