I've seen references to this but I have no idea what's going on. Can someone give me the tea?

It was from an interivew.

"I admire people, and I've done it myself, who go on a talk show and go, 'Hey, we gotta keep movie theaters alive. You know, we gotta keep this genre alive,' " he said. "And another part of me feels like, if people want to see it, like Barbie, like Oppenheimer, they're going to go see it and go out of their way to be loud and proud about it."

The conversation eventually turned to other art forms, prompting Chalamet to make an offhanded remark about ballet and opera.

"I don't want to be working in ballet or opera, or you know, things where it's like, 'Hey, keep this thing alive,' even though it's like, no one cares about this anymore," he said, drawing laughter from both McConaughey and the crowd.

In my view, he said nothing wrong. He was saying he doesn't want to see movies go the way of ballet and opera which ARE dying art forms. If people DID care about ballet/opera, they wouldn't be seeing the insanely low numbers they have.

I just don't think you can compare ballet and opera to "all films." They have a smaller audience, but so do more highbrow films versus obvious blockbuster-style movies.

Anyway, I think Timothee's pornstache is ugly and he's dating a trashy Jenner, so I don't care for him for those reasons and not really this quote in particular.

That would be a valid concern if he'd kept it at movies, but saying that "no one cares" about centuries-old high-talent art forms is just...stupid. The numbers are lower because tickets are expensive, in part because running a whole stage production is just harder to fund than a billion-dollar movie industry that can be mass-exhibited--nothing to do with the art form itself.
