[First text box]
Yes, it's cool that the showrunner is a fan
She loves DS9
She loves Ben Sisko
She wrote a character who is a Dax
The Dax was Sisko's best friend
But she couldn't throw a bone to
An actor who needed their SAG card?
She really looked around and decided
Only SHE could do this cameo?
Maybe fans being in charge of
Something is actually a bad thing.

[Second text box]
I see this choice and think
"Oh, this is about fan service"
And I'm so fucking sick of fan service.
(I shouldn't need homework to watch these!)

Why do you need homework? It's just a role. Frankly, OP, you sound a little jelly. Just watch the show.

I genuinely don't get this secret. What actor did you want in the role instead? And what is your problem with this choice?

I think it's pretty clear. It's a show-runner giving herself the dream job of being in scene on her show she runs instead of stepping aside and allowing some struggling bit-part actor an opportunity.

I could be wrong but I think actors need a certain number of roles a year to remain in SAG.

Coming from someone who has a close family member who was a struggling bit-part actor, I see where the OP is coming from.

I roll my eyes everything Shyamalan cameos in his own films.

DA
But that’s not the showrunner. That’s Tawny Newsome.

Ah, then I guess I misunderstood the secret. I don't watch the new ST shows.

She's not the showrunner, but she is a co-producer and she wrote the episode this character appears in.

I feel like this is a director tradition with Hitchcock and Tarantino and some others. Oh, Woody Allen put himself in everything. But to poor effect, because he's so fug.

Not even that he's fug but he's so annoyingly nebbish that I never got the appeal, so I never watched a single one of his movies. His presence actively pushed me away from his films.

Then he married his step daughter or adopted daughter or whatever.

Then the allegations.

Nothing lost on my end, hurray!

I understand being sick of fan service but just don’t see this as that. I see it more like casting someone who’s a passionate Trekkie à la Whoopie Goldberg vs “we have the voice of Mariner!” I know there is obviously some crossover between LD and SA but on the whole, it really doesn’t seem like the same audience.

Your like about the SAG card though makes me curious. Was there someone in particular considered for the part that didn’t get it? Or are you just saying in general the role should have gone to anyone who didn’t have their card yet?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-20 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Star Trek shows are absolutely full of cameos and shoutouts. If you don't like that in general, okay, but this seems a pretty minor role to pick on. She was on screen for maybe two minutes. Do you have the same problem with Stephen Colbert, Chiwetel Ejiofor or Cirroc Lofton? Or them using Avery Brooks' voice in the same episode?
