This whole incident has made me realize people are not that far away from insisting disabled people should be in asylums.

I haven't kept up with this past the initial uproar. How did a discussion about racism and Tourette's turn into what OP is talking about?

I’m not OP, but I definitely saw conversations along the lines of “well, if you can’t control your behavior and speech maybe you shouldn’t be allowed at televised events, or maybe big events generally, or maybe near children, or maybe in public spaces… etc”

Not explicitly saying that people with Tourette’s need to be institutionalized, but walking down a path that leads there.

Saw some people saying if you can't control yourself you should cut your tongue out.

I'll be good money that some of those asshats are men who wouldn't feel the same way about chopping off their own dicks.

Uhhh whaaaaaaaaaat?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-20 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, okay. People suck.

And it's stupid because it was obviously BAFTA who dropped the ball there; they could bleep people saying pro-Palestinian things and when John Davidson's tic resulted in an F-bomb directed at Alan Cumming but they couldn't bleep the N-bomb? I'm not sure if that was actual malice or sufficiently wilful stupidity on BAFTA's part.

I mean... have you seen the current state of the world?

Reminds me of a bit in the Hitchhiker’s Guide saga: a character named Wonko the Sane, who lives in a place called Outside the Asylum.

He built an inside-out building to enclose all of the craziness of the world at large, leaving him and a few others as the only ones “outside” of it.

I feel awful for Davidson, because he was promised that the recording would be edited and he even noted that a mic audience near him was poor planning, /and/ I do think it's fair that those who heard awful words being shouted at them were upset, even if they understood it wasn't intentional in the slightest. The only failure here was on the BBC for not being on top of their editing and sound planning, because that's just a shit situation all around.
