I loved this show until the last few episode. I don’t know what happened, but the story really stalled and the ending was anticlimactic. The main character basically had no reaction when his wife died, and the bad guys downfall/death was so unsatisfying. I feel like a lot of K-dramas start off strong but have a drop in quality towards the end.

Hey, Call the Midwife finally killed the old bat. After teasing it from literally the start of season one, episode one, they got to within fifteen minutes from the "roll credits" of the grand series finale before they did it. 14 years of "Is Sister Monica Joan gonna die tonight" before the answer was "yes".

I was right, it had lost all emotional impact to me.

If you use racial /ethnic, gender /gender identity/sex or sexual orientation based slurs against someone you can't convince me that "it's not about that"/"I don't hate them for that!" The moment you brought slurs for an unchangeable aspect of them, you MADE it about that.

I cannot STAND Lily Orchard (cartoon/media analyst critic) and the very SOUND of her voice raises my hackles She's an annoying contrarian, often just doesn't GET things if it suits her narrative and is also lately a HUUUUUGE hypocrite for throwing in her lot with the anti "if you write that in fiction you're promoting it" crowd with some of the stuff she wrote in the past and now lies/is in denial about. But I also have loved ones who are trans, so if someone were to start hurling around trans slurs an deadnaming her- I would be among the first to tell them to shut the fuck up and pick a REAL problem about her.

People resorting to use bigotry in their beefs with someone also gives that person a reason/excuse to point to when saying "They only hate me because I'm [Race/Gender/Orientation]"

I know this is bait, but ... why?

It's a poorly written, plothole-laden children's series even without the reams and reams of transphobic baggage attached.

There are so many excellent books out there, why would you stick with this one knowing all you do?

I get nostalgia, I do, but at this point any whole-ass adult who proclaims they're a fan of this nonsense without also being a current fan of other drivel they enjoyed in their childhood is just sad. Read literally anything else, you stunted bigot.

Being completely unfamiliar with this, I assumed the secret was "Steven Universe is garbage and here's why..." and the rest was the explanation.

Needless to say, I came out of it even more confused than I was at the start.

Secrets you don't want to make...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Monday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.

Cheers,

a secret maker

P.S. Please don't worry if you've submitted a secret and it hasn't been posted yet. I usually post these threads before running out of the previous batch of secrets to get a head start on the next batch.

"Secrets you don't want to make..." thread is up!

Leaving aside all questions of JKR's descipcability...

People are allowed to like things, even if they are poorly written.

People are allowed to like things, even with plotholes.

People are allowed to like things, even if they are objectively terrible.

People are not obligated to only like "good" material.

The issue of JKR's bigotry is obviously a fair one, but crying "why would you like something objectively bad" is just fucking stupid.

Me too! The books have plenty wrong with them, but the magical quality that made tens of millions of people fall in love with the story when it was being published is still there, and for me that's easily enough to make the series an enduring and loveable pop-cultural classic.

HP is also a really perfect source text for being fannish about, which is a huge component of my enduring love, for sure. The world of the story is expansive and lively but also loose and messy (and yes, flawed) in a way that makes it incredibly inviting to play around with, and something similar can be said about the characters. They're clear and identifiable to the point of being iconic, while at the same time they're written in a way that is simple enough and flawed enough to make exploring them further through fanworks really rewarding and engaging.

I would say my love for canon is more of a passive, fond love. Whereas the story and the characters as they exist through the lens of fandom is where all of my active, engaged enthusiasm lies now.

No, yeah, I feel you so hard.

Me: I hate this person! Her takes are rancid, her opinions are uninformed, her general knowledge base is shallow, she ships my NOtp, and her tumblr background autoplays a midi of Flight of the Bumblebees that's way too loud. I have her blocked on everything!

Them: Yeah that bitch! Goes to show women don't belong in scifi!

Me: Now I'm blocking you too! Goddammit!!!

For a brief moment I lived in a world where fandom opinions were as important to everyone as they are to me and I forgot about irl bigotry.
