If you use racial /ethnic, gender /gender identity/sex or sexual orientation based slurs against someone you can't convince me that "it's not about that"/"I don't hate them for that!" The moment you brought slurs for an unchangeable aspect of them, you MADE it about that.

I cannot STAND Lily Orchard (cartoon/media analyst critic) and the very SOUND of her voice raises my hackles She's an annoying contrarian, often just doesn't GET things if it suits her narrative and is also lately a HUUUUUGE hypocrite for throwing in her lot with the anti "if you write that in fiction you're promoting it" crowd with some of the stuff she wrote in the past and now lies/is in denial about. But I also have loved ones who are trans, so if someone were to start hurling around trans slurs an deadnaming her- I would be among the first to tell them to shut the fuck up and pick a REAL problem about her.

People resorting to use bigotry in their beefs with someone also gives that person a reason/excuse to point to when saying "They only hate me because I'm [Race/Gender/Orientation]"

Being completely unfamiliar with this, I assumed the secret was "Steven Universe is garbage and here's why..." and the rest was the explanation.

Needless to say, I came out of it even more confused than I was at the start.

No, yeah, I feel you so hard.

Me: I hate this person! Her takes are rancid, her opinions are uninformed, her general knowledge base is shallow, she ships my NOtp, and her tumblr background autoplays a midi of Flight of the Bumblebees that's way too loud. I have her blocked on everything!

Them: Yeah that bitch! Goes to show women don't belong in scifi!

Me: Now I'm blocking you too! Goddammit!!!

For a brief moment I lived in a world where fandom opinions were as important to everyone as they are to me and I forgot about irl bigotry.

This shouldn't be a hot take but jfc it is, the number of times I've seen someone from a group do something bad and then all of a sudden it's open season on the applicable slurs and it's like 'oh you were always thinking this but now you have a reason to let loose' and it's awful.

Yep. Big "we only use the hard r for the people that deserve it" energy.

That still makes you people that use the word.

Yup. And some think that the person being horrible is justification for the slur. And no, it's not. I understand where they're coming from and what they're trying to do but in the end, they're just normalizing slurs and that's not cool.

Yep. And this is something I remember realizing/learning in grade school, so it’s always odd to me that it isn’t taken as obvious by most people.

I get that sometimes slurs and offensive language are “in the air” around you so much that they might come more quickly than you’d like. Sometimes our brains are more bigoted than we’d like and it takes some work to unlearn that. But that’s not a free pass and definitely not when you have a moment to compose your words and think about what you’re saying.

Very true, I'm not familiar with the person in question but I agree. When people direct bigotry towards a "bad person" (including when the person actually did something serious, such as using homophobic insults against an abusive gay celebrity) it just shows me that they really hold those bigoted beliefs and are fine with letting it out against an acceptable target. It distracts from the actual criticism and exposes the true views of the criticizer.
