Attendees do not choose their own seats for award shows. The producers of the show assign the seats.

He was sat 41 rows away from the stage. At 41 rows away from the stage he thought he was far enough back to not disrupt proceedings. After the N-word incident, it became evident the presenters could hear him, and he left the event.

I have not been to the theater where the BAFTAs were held, but 41 rows away does seem to be far enough away to not be overheard by those on the stage.
