Regarding relating to youthful seeming characters, I'm the same but on the feminine side. I often find myself thinking of myself as a 'girl' and I'm well into my thirties.

Its kinda weird and frustrating because at the same time i dislike others infantalizing me in certain ways, but thats more in relation to my being autistic. Still...*shrug*. Its weird. It feels like me saying "Only I can infantalize myself"

Same here, it is weird but in a way it also makes sense? The world infantilizes autistic people so much that we can't help but internalize it a bit. It's like how scientists say that the more we know the more we recognize we don't know, but with regards to maturity. We are mature enough to recognize our immaturity. And allistic society puts a heavy spotlight on it.

Yeah
Also there was a while in childhood when there was a huge gap between my physical maturity and my emotional/mental maturity. That shit sticks with you, especially if it started in childhood.

I guess thats a factor

Oh yeah, I am female myself, and I 100% still think of myself as a "girl" despite being 38. I just also (in addition to identifying with plenty of female characters) tend to identify with male characters who I see as "boys" more than male characters who I see as "men."

And I totally get you about hating being infantilized, which can seem to conflict with referring to myself as a girl. I think I've decided I'm a proponent of the idea that "girl" and "woman" should both be neutral options (when applied to oneself) that people of any age should feel free to choose from. If an eighty-year-old woman feels like a girl, then I am very in favor of her thinking of and referring to herself as a girl, I love that for her, and fuck anyone who wants to tell her it's invalid or problematic, you know?

The reason this secret is specifically about adult male characters still being "boys" in my mind is because conceptualizing adult men in that way feels way less common than conceptualizing grown women as "girls." I very much do both, but one feels basically normative while the other feels like its going against the grain. #BecauseSexism

Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I feel like my previous comment is reading less, "Yes! I like your comment and want to expound on it!" and more, like, defensive? But I very much meant the former and not the latter, it's just really late here and my brain is toast. XD
