There's a game I play. If you played the game too, you'd see tons and tons of daily players who are glad to be there. We're having fun, making friends, loving the game.

Outside the game, there's a subreddit where everyone goes to complain about various things in it. A large percentage of the readers there follow the sub but don't even play the game any more, and have lost all perspective of the fact that the only part of the fandom they're seeing now is the vents forum. They think the game is full of assholes and are convinced everyone is having a miserable, negative time.

Sometimes the people on FS remind me of them.

1) There's no wrong way to play a game.

2) I'm not interested in your thoughts about a game if you haven't even finished Act 1.

I wish players who revel in their restartitus would make their own spaces.

I feel personally betrayed by Naomi Novak's books being shit, because I remember being fandom friends with them and really enjoying their fic and general style.

I should go back and re-read their old stuff, maybe my memory is rose tinted, but I also don't want those fun memories ruined by reality.

I don't want to sound mean/defeatist, but I just feel like this is dead on arrival in the vein of Jordan Peele rebooting The Twilight Zone. The classic of both shows are still beloved today and have huge fandoms, so trying to reboot it without any of the original creators, actors, etc make the core fans less likely to want to watch it and despite how good it may be, it'll be compared to the classic. I hope they find success, but I won't be surprised to hear this is cancelled after 2 seasons.

Just a week in and I think Pokopia may be ruining my life. I'm losing hours and eyesight.

I hate building games. I just love finding Pokemon with my stupid derpy ditto face.

Sometimes a male character can be well into his legal-adult years and I still find it jarring if he's referred to as a man. It's age-dependent to some extent (most characters in their early 20s are still boys or guys in my mind), but it also depends on how the character is presented—i.e. maturity, comportment, responsibilities, etc. There are even characters in their late 20s that my brain doesn't think of as men (Mike from S1 of Suits as an example).

For the record, this isn't some sneaky, "That 25yo is child-coded" anti bullshit. One of my OTPs is aged 18/48. Every single time I see the 18yo character referred to as a man, my brain goes, "Ma'am, that is a boy."

Also for the record, I love and respect "boy" characters just as deeply as "man" characters. (I also tend to relate to them more, which is a whole other can of worms, but yeah.)

Around what age or maturity level or stage of life or whatever else do you think the divide between 'boy' and 'man' lies?

Bonus points: is it different from the divide between 'girl' and 'woman'?

Extra bonus points: if a male character isn't 'a boy' but not quite 'a man', he's usually 'a guy'. What's the female character equivalent for that to you?

it definitely feels like the people of fandomsecrets don't actually participate in fandom or anything. It's all about treating fanfiction like original fiction, not taking in the canons of the fic they're reading, not leaving comments/kudos, not participating. Just consuming and complaining.

That's been my experience here, anyway.

Somewhere between 22 and 25 for both. Basically, college has ended, they really are out into the adult world.

This makes sense to me, especially for male characters.

Compared to female characters (who tend to be boxed into either the "normal human woman aged 18-25" category or the "decrepit old crone at 35" category), male characters tend to get a broader spectrum of depth across a much wider age range.

When characters in their 30s, 40s, and 50s are actually categorized as "men" rather than "wizened ancients", it's a lot easier to look at the 18-25 range, see their youth for what it is, and recognise that they are, ultimately, just boys.

Ironically this comment is a good example of lacking the perspective the secret is talking about. Complaints on a vent forum is expected. It's literally what they're for

I loved The X-Files, so I'll certainly give this a chance.

That MSR pairing was lightning in a bottle though. The stories were good on the original show, but ngl, I was also watching it for the ship.
