I get what you mean about her fanfic being well written but not having the kind of relationship to canon that I want from fanfic. It's like she wants to use canon purely as a springboard, and then ball it up and throw it away in favor of worldbuilding and characterizations that are very discordant with canon but much more to her own personal taste and worldview.

Which is fine (she is quite good at worldbuilding), but really not what I want from fanfic. I'm not a canon zealot by any means, but I do want to feel like the fic has a closer relationship with canon than just, "The canon was dumb but it had a little potential, so I took about 10% of it that I didn't hate and wrote this much better story." (By which I mean that the vibe I get is that NN perceives her version as a much better story, and not that I personally find it a much better story.)
