I would never call her books shit, or her fanfic for that matter. I think she's quite a skilled writer in most respects. But my god do I not vibe with her narrative preferences and sensibilities AT ALL.

She can usually get my interest just fine, but then she loses it again as her stories repeatedly focus on things I find unrewarding and go in directions I find unenticing. I've also noticed that the more isolated her protagonist is, the more her writing works for me. (The first couple thousand words of her HP fic Slithering are absolutely masterful and insanely devastating, and I will die on that hill, but it is totally not a coincidence that Draco is largely alone throughout that portion of the fic.) It's usually once her protagonist begins engaging more with other characters that her writing really starts to fall flat for me, because the dynamics between the protagonist and the other characters tend to feel really hollow to me. On some underlying level it feels like the protagonist is still the only one who really matters. And even though the writing might tell the reader that the protagonist now cares about certain characters, Novik rarely actually makes me feel it.
