Talk to your friend about the costs. That's not fair on you, but also neither you nor your friend are going to be able to convince the dad about this. It's a really common among elderly people to find ways to avoid things they're scared of doing by putting up what looks like a rational argument on the surface. It's also possible that the emotional aspect of his wife's appointment and driving himself is too much for him, but he can't admit that either. I am a volunteer driver for elderly and disabled people in my community and it's really common for them to be technically able to do something but practically/emotionally not able. Or avoidant.

I'm pretty sure he's kind of anxious about parking in tight spots (which is most of the older parking garages here) because he has crashed his car into other parked cars in parking lots several times lately so that's definitely a factor - not that he'd admit it. But yeah, I'll wait and see - maybe he'll offer to chip in for gas - might just happen. If not, I'll see what I'll do.
