I will never think of Star Trek "fan productions" as anything other than pathetic and stupid. And I'm sick of hearing about them as if they were any good.

For a certain time in a certain era I remember everyone convinced OCs were the cause of the "Mary Sue problem" but honestly? Some of the WORST offenders in some of my fandoms were folks who prided themselves on sticking to canon.

B!S: Mary Sueish characters aren't even the worst kind of shitty fic. They're honestly ignorable and didn't justify the massive harassment of young, new, and often female fans just getting into fic. A bunch of people just wanted to be assholes to the kiddos

As a queer gamer I avoid queer gaming spaces like the plague.

Never been in one that was focused on the game and not on everybody hooking up with everybody else with games as the hobby vehicle + the 'NSFW' channel being the most active + someone at some point trying to send me nudes or meet up IRL.

At this point I'd rather play with a bunch of middle aged married straight dads with kids :\

When I say I never liked Zutara, people assume I liked Kataang instead. Nah, dude, Zukaang was where it was at. The dragons, the parallel goals, the Roku/Sozin flashback!

(Katara needed some time to be single and not responsible for someone else for a while, she's earned it)

Not secret: I suspect that people who make extreme claims about female-dominated fandoms as a monolithic group have never actively participated in a female-dominated fandom at all. They're usually blindly regurgitating years-old screenshots of extreme behavior fished out by drama-hungry lurkers that have been reposted 10000 times and have never had any day-to-day interaction with the normal side of those fandoms.

Secret: I think exactly the same way about people who make the same extreme claims about male-dominated fandoms as a monolithic group, who behave exactly the same way about them. I find a lot of people agree with the first part above then are mad about the second part, though.

"Come on, we all know how THOSE people are" - both of these groups, who don't, in fact, have any idea how those people are

in before "I was in one fandom once, and so I know how ALL those fandoms are" - you're group 3

My interaction with fandom has almost entirely been in spaces dominated by women. This occasionally ends up with me forgetting men frequent these places too, and coming across them often feels like a jump scare.

Cool. Thanks for all you do. You are awesome.

Oh word, I'm kind of the same and not in a 'men can't be in women-fandoms' type way, but I do tend to assume that most fandomy folks are women so when I discover that someone is a dude I am surprised for a moment. It's like a 'oh yeah dudes can be into this too' even if it is somewhat less common.

"Ideal" relationship dynamic?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What would you consider your ideal relationship dynamic IRL, specifically involving you?
-"NOPE" can be an answer to this

What would you consider your ideal relationship dynamic in fiction, specifically NOT involving you?
-"NOPE" can be an answer to this too

Bonus: now combine both, if you specifically were involved in any fictional fantasy relationship of your choice, what's that ideal?
-"I'm somebody else entirely and my 300 LIs are all my rivals" is fair game, go wild

For me personally, honestly, I'm really only interested in sex, and barely interested in that at this point. Really don't need or want a relationship. So mostly nope.

I have two ideals in fiction. 1. friends who fall in love. Just a very long term bond that slowly develops into love. 2. Villains who love each other and hate everyone else. Who do all the evil things and are terrible people, but with each other their love is real.

When I was younger I used to be so staunchly 'anti-mary-sue' like some kind of cringey badge of honor, I never went after anyone writing them but I absolutely judged the people that did very harshly in my own head. Then I frankly grew the fuck up and realised that there is nothing wrong with it and to let people have their fun.

And of course these days I just roll my eyes at any mary-sue pearl clutching because it's all just another sexist front that people hide behind when female characters are good at anything, god forbid good at more than one thing. How dare a fictional character be special, that's clearly bad(but only when woman).
