"Ideal" relationship dynamic?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What would you consider your ideal relationship dynamic IRL, specifically involving you?
-"NOPE" can be an answer to this

What would you consider your ideal relationship dynamic in fiction, specifically NOT involving you?
-"NOPE" can be an answer to this too

Bonus: now combine both, if you specifically were involved in any fictional fantasy relationship of your choice, what's that ideal?
-"I'm somebody else entirely and my 300 LIs are all my rivals" is fair game, go wild

For me personally, honestly, I'm really only interested in sex, and barely interested in that at this point. Really don't need or want a relationship. So mostly nope.

I have two ideals in fiction. 1. friends who fall in love. Just a very long term bond that slowly develops into love. 2. Villains who love each other and hate everyone else. Who do all the evil things and are terrible people, but with each other their love is real.

NOPE

Power couple

Harem of competent men who do things in the world but also fuck each other and not me (and don't mind me watching).

Re: "Ideal" relationship dynamic?

Hmmm, tough call personally. I'm a weird mix of needy but also leave me alone. I'd want someone that is involved and we share a lot of hobbies/interests but also someone that has their own thing to do so we're not always doing things together. I love 'paralell play' type of thing - I'm playing a video game and they're reading a book or doing a craft on the couch with me, stuff like that.

In fic I love the codependent bordering on unhealthy relationship dynamic.

My brain is kind of blanking on the "somebody else entirely" fantasy scenario. Hmmm. Going to think on that for a bit.

Irl I am mostly a Nope person.

In fiction I like it all as long as it is healthy and full of love, however that may be expressed.

Fantasy, I want a relationship where I am pampered and taken care of and never doubt my place or partners love.

Mutual love and respect (and he's a service top)(I currently have this and it fucking rocks)

Varies, but right now I'm digging deeply toxic/make each other worse

Bad guy version of king & lionheart, it's still me and my spouse tho, we just have superpowers and rob the rich

IRL: Me and my enormous bank account plus amazing stock portfolio in a quiet, serene house full of cozy furniture and books that I share with a few houseplants.

In fiction: Honestly, it depends on the fandom and characters and writing.

Combination: Me and my enormous bank account, etc. etc. writing novels with a faithful and awesome cult following.

Involving me- low key, comfortable, we don't necessarily ever have to live together.

Not involving me- Friends to lovers but like, make it a little weird and codependent. Both my top ships at the moment are best friends who are just somewhat too enmeshed while Going Through It together.

Re: "Ideal" relationship dynamic?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-23 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Being together, but having our own separate lives/interests. No controlling behavior where I can't have friends or do anything alone. No one being the leader. No gender roles or pseudo-gender roles.

I think I like similar in fiction, which can be difficult with all the dominant rough men in het romance and all the roles that aren't quite gender roles but pretty damn similar in m/m and f/f fic. Maybe a little less often in f/f.

Why is patio furniture SO EXPENSIVE?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not looking for anything fancy, I'm not planning elaborate garden parties or wanting to have a really nice place. I just want a few chairs and maybe a little table, but it's all SO FREAKING EXPENSIVE. The stuff that's affordable is really bad quality. The stuff that's even semi-decent quality is super expensive. I don't remember it always being like this?

Granted, indoor furniture is also sky-high these days, but it's killing me that even stuff to go outside is so high. Uggghhhhh I'm tired of life costing so much.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Might be worth getting a costco membership for a month to buy some. That is where my sister got her couch and it is great.

You in the US? Probably tariffs, disrupted supply chains, and the like. All hail our glorious leader.

Re: Why is patio furniture SO EXPENSIVE?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, everything is crazy expensive these days but even before patio furniture was so unreasonably high. And it's not like you're even getting nice stuff! Just general crap quality plastic furniture is expensive. It's been like this for the past 10 years at least, because that's when I moved into my first house with a yard (rental) and started looking for outdoor furniture and was shocked the prices.

Re: Why is patio furniture SO EXPENSIVE?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-23 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
the last time I genuinely shopped for deck furniture was like 12 years ago, but I think a lot of it is trends. before HGTV and social media in general made backyard aesthetics trendy, it was reasonable unless you were looking at redwood or quality metal, which I expected an arm and a leg for. the economy, tariffs, etc are part of it but it wouldn't be jacked up if it wasn't trendy. even the shitty plastic, yeah.

to be fair, patio furniture being left outside doesn't help its longevity, but it used to be that was planned for. the treatment on the wood, coating the metal, it would at least hold out for a while. now, I see these instagram curated photos of yards with fabric cushions and pillows left out everywhere on untreated wicker, like....?! yeah it looks pretty on your insta but that shit's gonna rot in one season and Home Despot will happily charge you triple for a replacement. good job making it worse for the rest of us.

It really is!

One thing I like is heavy cast aluminum, but forget about it.

Iron is not bad if you can find some. Even secondhand, if you hit it with some rustoleum spray paint in a nice color, it's like new.

I have wicker that was under the eaves and it all got split from the water. So mad. I should have brought it inside during bad weather, I guess, but who wants to?

Have you ever felt like you developed a parasocial relationship with someone online?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, I want to admit that yes, this is inherently pathetic; I'm not defending or excusing myself here. But it has occurred to me that I care a little more than I should about a few people who I watch online. Since I'm aware of it now, I'm going to check myself, but I caught myself thinking about this podcast like the hosts are friends, like "Oh I wish I could hang out with them today" aka "I wish there was a new episode of their podcast to watch today" and it kind of concerns me that I thought that. Watching their podcast is NOT "hanging out" with them, and neither is interacting with a streamer. But it gives some of the same feels.

I do have a huge lack of friends IRL, which is probably what the problem is.

Definitely

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually made a secret about it a little bit ago. I found myself getting a little too parasocial with a person I followed and had to stop following them. Which I then feel a weird "I'm letting a friend down by not watching/supporting them" guilt because of the parasocial thing.

It's been a few months since I stopped watching them and I do feel better about it and have emotionally pulled back.

Re: Have you ever felt like you developed a parasocial relationship with someone online?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Parasocial relationships are quite common and not inherently bad. So long as your real life relationships aren't effected and you aren't emotionally dependent on the podcasts, it's fine. Think of them how you like. I also have a podcast that I think of as "hanging out" when I listen and a youtube channel that I refer to as "the boys" when discussing it with friends.

Re: Have you ever felt like you developed a parasocial relationship with someone online?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-22 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think "I wish there was a new podcast episode or stream today" is necessarily parasocial. I also don't think treating a stream as a fan hangout where you chat with other fans is parasocial, like "this streamer's chat is positive and funny and fun to be in" is the same as "this idol's fan forum is fun to post and chat with others in" or "this guy's stand up comedy show is fun to go watch as an audience member" right? But treating viewing a stream the same as hanging out with the host or watching a tv episode and feeling like you hung out with the actors would cross that line for me. Not sure if I've ever gone that far, I don't think I have

Sam Kieth, the creator of The Maxx *Points to icon*, died and I am very, very sad. I can't think of a time a non-family death has hit me this hard.

I just needed to say that. Thank you.
