Have you ever felt like you developed a parasocial relationship with someone online?

First of all, I want to admit that yes, this is inherently pathetic; I'm not defending or excusing myself here. But it has occurred to me that I care a little more than I should about a few people who I watch online. Since I'm aware of it now, I'm going to check myself, but I caught myself thinking about this podcast like the hosts are friends, like "Oh I wish I could hang out with them today" aka "I wish there was a new episode of their podcast to watch today" and it kind of concerns me that I thought that. Watching their podcast is NOT "hanging out" with them, and neither is interacting with a streamer. But it gives some of the same feels.

I do have a huge lack of friends IRL, which is probably what the problem is.

Definitely

I actually made a secret about it a little bit ago. I found myself getting a little too parasocial with a person I followed and had to stop following them. Which I then feel a weird "I'm letting a friend down by not watching/supporting them" guilt because of the parasocial thing.

It's been a few months since I stopped watching them and I do feel better about it and have emotionally pulled back.

Parasocial relationships are quite common and not inherently bad. So long as your real life relationships aren't effected and you aren't emotionally dependent on the podcasts, it's fine. Think of them how you like. I also have a podcast that I think of as "hanging out" when I listen and a youtube channel that I refer to as "the boys" when discussing it with friends.

Yeah, if we didn't have parasocial relationships 90% of celebrity stuff would collapse, let alone advertising and influencers! (the other 10% I leave open for genuine skill and/or horniness). Some degree of parasociality is absolutely normal.

I don't think "I wish there was a new podcast episode or stream today" is necessarily parasocial. I also don't think treating a stream as a fan hangout where you chat with other fans is parasocial, like "this streamer's chat is positive and funny and fun to be in" is the same as "this idol's fan forum is fun to post and chat with others in" or "this guy's stand up comedy show is fun to go watch as an audience member" right? But treating viewing a stream the same as hanging out with the host or watching a tv episode and feeling like you hung out with the actors would cross that line for me. Not sure if I've ever gone that far, I don't think I have

Little crushes? Sure. I work from home long days so I think I just don't get out enough among people in the meat world.
