Are the Marauders not canon?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
All these comments are making me doubt my fandom osmosis knowledge. I thought the fandom loved it and took it straight from canon, but was it more one line spurred on a whole beloved trope?

From my understanding the Marauders fic in question is them at Hogwarts (maybe after Hogwarts?) in the 70's, which from canon more or less amounts to some names (minus I guess the OG 4 but even then we don't know a lot). I'm not a Harry Potter fan so maybe I'm wrong here

The Marauders existing is canon - from the map that they created (Prisoner of Azkaban, et al.).

Also from Prisoner of Azkaban, Sirius and James met on the train and met Remus and Peter afterwards. By their fifth year, the other three had secretly become unregistered Animagi in order to assist Remus during his werewolf transformations. Peter was small and nimble enough as Wormtail to get past the Whomping Willow, so the group could get to the Shrieking Shack. They were frequently out of their beds at night to explore Hogwarts' grounds and the village of Hogsmeade during Lupins' transformation.

At least two incidents involving Snape are canon - him being bullied (Order of the Phoenix) and what happened in the Shrieking Shack (Prisoner of Azkaban).
