I know it's irrational, but I feel guilty telling my Animal Crossing villagers that I don't want them to come visit me, or making them leave my house when they show up... so I don't squish the roaches. The roaches appear after you haven't logged in for an extended time. I let them run free so everyone who tries to visit leaves as soon as they see them.

I know they're just pixels, but I feel so bad to tell them NO. This is the easier way out!

Makes me think of “oh, no, my place is such a mess!” as a convenient excuse for not inviting people over.

As someone who’s weirdly intense about maintaining private spaces (and pretty lax on housecleaning), I’m sure I’ve used that many times.

Oh god I would absolutely do this if I played that game! There is this game I'm playing and when a new quest pops up the person giving it usually says something like "meet me X as soon as possible, we can't delay!" And I know they'll wait there forever but I feel bad and usually try and go and do the quest first thing.

Games are designed that way. They want you to engage with and feel an attachment to the game and characters are just one way to do it. I don't think you should feel irrational for feeling something for them any more than you should feel irrational for feeling something for any other type of fictional character. That said, maybe you can reframe it in your head as establishing your boundaries or not overindulging the characters, so you won't feel bad about saying no.

I do the same because the game actually penalizes you for asking them to leave. Or it did; I hadn’t played in. Couple years and I know they made some big changes recently. But it used to be that if you asked a villager to leave, they wouldn’t be as friendly. If you asked them multiple times, they wouldn’t like you and might leave the island. If you ask everyone to leave anytime someone comes over, the whole island thinks you’re an asshole and will talk about how big of an asshole they all think you are. It’s one of the reasons I stopped playing. Life is hard enough doing the social balancing act IRL.

When there's a new game in a genre I like, I like to check out the game's twitch category and watch different people play it. But I absolutely refuse to watch any Vtubers. They are this weird mix of incredibly cringy and kind of unpleasant and I hate everything about them.

I was planning on making a similar secret. I'm not allowed to say anything about anyone being Cringe, but there is something about Vtubers that put me off. I may check on one if the have a cool different model, but most are just 'anime', and tend to come with the cutesy anime girl voice that tends to grind at me.

I don’t watch streamers in the first place, but if I did, I think I’d be just the same. I understand it at the level of logistics and privacy vs popular appeal, but in practice it just hits an uncomfortably creepy/uncanny note for me while also feeling blatantly artificial.

I totally agree. I just cannot get into vtubers for some reason. I enjoy seeing someone's actual face, but I'd actually prefer to have *nothing* over a weird model emoting there in the corner. I just find them distracting and unappealing, and I will not watch one.

This book had an interesting premise, I enjoyed the reality tv setting even I haven't watched the Bachelor/that type of show.

But at some points I felt like I was not reading a book but tumblr!

World Cup always brings fresh blood into football fandom. New creators, new fic, new art, yay!

But this year's tournament is so bloated and a political shitstorm I am not sure if anything good can come out of this mess.

So apparently a pretty popular Marauders era fanfic just got licensed by a publisher and I'm not sure how to feel about it. Like, I kind of get it with AUs that are often pretty far removed from the original canon anyway but this fic is very canon compliant and I just don't see how you could reasonably file off the serial numbers to get it to a credibly original state.

I'm also not thrilled about this blurring the legal lines even more. I know it's been a thing for years now but with stories that are this close to someone else's intellectual property, I fear things will get really messy someday.

I find it more and more difficult to have neutral conversations with fans. If I defend their thing, I must also be a fan (I'm not). If I criticize their thing, I must be an hater (I'm not). People can discuss the merits and flaws of a thing without feeling strongly about it. People can defend the right of something to exist on principle without being personally invested.

Some days it feels like the internet runs purely on feels now.
