Games are designed that way. They want you to engage with and feel an attachment to the game and characters are just one way to do it. I don't think you should feel irrational for feeling something for them any more than you should feel irrational for feeling something for any other type of fictional character. That said, maybe you can reframe it in your head as establishing your boundaries or not overindulging the characters, so you won't feel bad about saying no.
