The background that was set up for him (very poor boy from a working-class in a failing northern industrial town in the 1960s, consistently bullied on that basis) is exceedingly unlikely to be Black. If he had been, he'd have a brand new set of issues to go with all his other issues. But they might have just updated the whole thing to the present day for all I know.

Ten bucks says they make it color-blind and never mention any racial aspects at all.

this is my guess too. they should have just left him white. literally any other character they could have made black instead but they had to go with the what is arguably the worst possible choice
