My mom is in a group chat with a few of her sisters, we live in different states and talk over text and Facebook. My mom told me when driving me home from work that she showed the group chat a recent photo of my sister... and one of my aunts put it through AI and made an edit of her eyes opened, and some "90s punk" edit. Mom is 60 but aware of the ethical issues with AI so she tried to explain that aunt just put her niece's photo in a dataset *without her permission*... but aunt kept excusing it with "the image won't leave my phone, I have sharing turned off". LLMs still train data based off of what people input. I have to use AI at my job and for HTML coding, I know this. Even if it was just private fun, she still edited my sister's photo without her permission. My sister knows and is really upset about this too.

My mom told me she isn't going to post photos of us in the group chat anymore after this. I keep thinking about the vent posted on FS months ago where someone's coworker made some deepfake video of them and other coworkers dancing, it's so creepy to just edit someone's photo and then show it to them without permission.

I'm sorry. That is kind of creepy. I'd be creeped out if my mom did that to me or anyone. Sorry your mom did that. I hope she really did learn and won't do it again.

My aunt did that, not my mom. All my mom did was share a recent photo of my sister in the group chat, since she's turning 26 next week. Mom technically can't control her sisters from doing something like that, but I feel like its basic etiquette to not just throw someone's photo into ChatGPT...? Ugh.

Sorry, misread. And yes, that is totally basic etiquette. or it should be.

That's one of the biggest problems with trying to stop AI. Most of the people using it are too dumb to understand what it is, how it works, or why it's bad. It's just a silly toy to them. I mean, the internet was already beyond their intellectual grasp, so AI... impossible.

This aunt is mid-late 60s and works for a phone company, so she's not completely technology inept. But another aunt I personally dislike loves posting random AI generated images of stupid things like dogs wearing suits. People who doomscroll or watch too much short form content just go "ooh, shiny" and think nothing else. Or they take what corporations day at face value. Turning menory off from ChatGPT doesn't mean you aren't contributing to the dataset.
I'm probably ranting, but I'm so tired of how "surface level" people are.

I hear you, and agree. A lot of people just don't think about... well, anything.

I had to explain this to my 80 year old aunt too, but she eventually understood that the computer that made the changes kept the image from her phone.

I don't talk to this aunt, but from what my mom told me, she doesn't seem to understand datasets and thinks if it's on her phone, it's private. She also generated AI crap of animals in our backyard that mom shared. It's honestly not funny to me.
