Why if everyone misses forums and websites, no one's built or rebuilt forums and websites.

Because people like the theory and usage of forums but nobody wants to invest time, money and possible legal liability into creating, hosting and moderating their own platforms.

My guess is that nobody thinks they'd actually gain traction, and nobody wants to experience the sad, zombified 2026 version of something that used to feel lively and fun.

As someone who misses forums, I've tried. Nobody actually comes to use them.

yep it's this.

the only forums still thriving by whatever metric one would call "thriving" are forums that never went down. like Dreamwidth, they've been like that consistently without ever shutting down or transitioning, updating only a handful of essential codes but otherwise not changing the experience.

in other words, forums that didn't get nuked when ezboard went down.
