Actor stanning has always been there in fandom, it's not a new thing, but it certainly feels like being just as obsessed with the cast as well as the characters has become an expected norm in fandom and I hate it.

I don't want to squee over the actors when I'm talking about the characters, I don't care about keeping up with whatever they're doing outside of the role I enjoyed. I want to ambivalently ignore them but modern fandom makes that so hard.

I agree. I'm not even in live action fandoms! I'm in Resident Evil fandom and I don't give a damn what Leon's face model says or thinks or does. It has nothing to do with Leon. It has nothing to do with me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
This is part of why I am always so disappointed when something I like gets a LA adaptation, especially books. I’m here for the thing. Let me enjoy the thing. Go enjoy the ancillary things somewhere else. But nope, that chatter always takes over the main fandom spaces and no one talks about the actual subject(s) of the fandom anymore :(

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah it certainly feels like it's gotten louder and more expected over the years, not to mention the weird pseudo-shippy shit people do with the pair of actors of a popular fandom ship were people over analyse what they say/do together to get some bizarre bff's status from the fanbases perspective.

I just want to like the canon as it is man.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
True story, that's one of the reasons I left the Heroes fandom way back when. I didn't care about Milo Ventimiglia(sp?) or Zach Quinto. I wanted to talk about the show. Seems like it's only gotten more cast-focused.

I learned my lesson about squeeing over actors during Tom Cruise's weird phase. After that I swore off following or learning about actors beyond their CV. It really ruined the shows/movies if they turned into weirdos/abusers/finding out they are actually awful people.

I'm sick of modern sci-fi showrunners tossing women and minority actors off the glass cliff to try and exculpate themselves from having written shitty shows. Just write better shows and better scripts for the actors, and it won't matter who the actors are.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree but also I’d like to see those roles written for those actors. No more of this colorblind bullshit where you have POCs playing characters who are very obviously white (and usually middle class).

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, just cast a white middle class male. Using middle class in the British sense, not the American. It is a proven formula, why mess with it.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh I wish the producers didn’t all agree with that unironically :(

I do not understand why so many Jane Austen Sequels are murder mysteries.

The silliness of the concept even is a plot-point in Northanger Abbey.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it all cause we all kinda secretly want to murder Wickham? Even the TV show Sharpe gave into that and killed him in Sharpe's Justice. Good.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL

I read that too fast and thought you meant they killed Sharpe and spent a very confused 20 seconds wondering which one of us was wrong. Then I reread your comment *face!palm*

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Sharpe is such a badass character, he even survived being played by Sean Bean.

Nah in Sharpe's Justice George Wickham, a posh Southern Git who is in command of a Northern Militia (exactly as Jane Austen left his character) and who sat out the war at home in comfort and corruption, canonically gets stabbed to death by Sharpe for making the mistake of being a posh git in a Sharpe episode, and for thinking that being a good performative duellist meant he was also a good combat swordfighter. Turns out those are very different skillsets and he only won his first duel with Sharpe because it was a social performance and Sharpe was holding back from every kill opportunity Wickham left himself wide open to.

I liked Scrubs: Med School.

That's not the secret.

I'm mad at the new Scrubs reboot/continuation because it decanonizes Med School! That is the secret.

B!S: I'm more mad, because I actually enjoy the new Scrubs series too even though it is the same thing again. Judy Reyes has not aged even a single day!

nothing kills a sci-fi fan-word or fan-concept faster than elon musk trying to adopt it

he's the pathetic kind of nerd that even other pathetic nerds look down on

i just wish he'd stop killing fan stuff i like

get out of the nerd pool elon

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
He's like the guy who gushes about how much he loves Lord of the Rings, but at most, slept through half of the second movie from 20 years ago, and can't understand what people are talking about when they list their favorite moments from the books or any adaptation.

He also evidently cheats at video games by paying someone to bulk up his fighter before he uses it in battle.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: He's such a little bitch. And he's loyal to nothing.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus, if you are gonna "cheat" at videogames then just either use easy mode, or use the "cheat" codes.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to play a videogame on easy or skip a difficult bit you don't enjoy. Paying someone to do it, presumably so he could still claim nerd cred(?), and faking it is just so... desperate and needy.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
DA
Very true and it made him a laughing stock. It was even funnier when he basically made Grimes release a statement saying she had personally witnessed him doing some of what he claimed in COD.

But this is all really old news and even the jokes about it petered out probably six months ago.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly this is the first time I’ve seen anyone anywhere mention him since probably late last summer, maybe early autumn. Within a month or two of ending his DOGE role he disappeared from the news and memes. I travel in some very nerdy circles and live on nerdy subreddits and no one ever brings him up. And these are definitely the nerd topics he’s gravitated to in years past, all the stuff that’s nerdy but cool.

I guess what I’m trying to say is you need to retrain the algorithm or kick some pathetic assholes out of your digital life. Because this guy isn’t relevant and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s a very small slice that still bring him up and it looks like you’re in it.

SA

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I left out the main point: he isn’t killing any words or concepts because the vast majority of the world isn’t paying attention to him, especially in nerd circles. The freeze out is particularly strong in nerd circles because so many fell for his bullshit for a long time and they’re now embarrassed or feel betrayed.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No, he's very much still relevant. Except instead of him ruining nerd stuff, it's how much he begged to be a part of Epstein's circle but just wasn't cool enough for them. And as long as the South African billionaire who didn't come over to the US legally is still hanging around here instead of a prison, training Grok to slobknob him, and supporting Neo-Nazi movements around the world, don't assume you've heard the last of him.

I dunno, he doesn’t seem to have done any long-term damage to the Iain Banks fandom.

Personally, I think what he killed is Rationalism. We tried so hard to believe true things and not false things, and we produced Musk, Grimes, Sam Bankman-Fried, Ziz LaSota, and the guy who’s in Newsweek calling for bombing AI research labs.

I don't understand the American Med school system. You do an unrelated degree and then go to medical school somewhere completely different? Why? Just a medical degree at one university right from the start, don't you miss out a lot of stuff doing it your way?

Re: Common things you don't understand thread.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The general degree might be cheaper at one university (like a state one).

Re: Common things you don't understand thread.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-29 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get why you'd need a general degree rather than cracking on with the medical one right from the off.

I don't get why some folks hate snub nosed revolvers, particularly old ones. Love the old British Bulldog Pocket Revolver, nice gun to target shoot with.

Learned helplessness. So many people are bizarrely happy to 1. not know how to do something, but also 2. not even try to learn. It's just weird as shit to me man.

I don't wanna do it, I'm lazy, and if someone else can be suckered into doing it for me then I am both winning at capitalism (having got more money for less labour) and also have more time free for the stuff I do like doing.

For some, it's socialization to defer tasks to someone else because possibly "gendered roles" and they don't want to break out of that, even if it's toxic bullshit.

For others, they may have attempted to do certain tasks in the past, and were shamed/bullied/mocked mercilessly for failing at them (regardless of skill level) that they just don't want to repeat that experience in any way.

Agreed. I'm constantly having to rein in the urge to yell at my colleagues in the chat because they've suddenly forgotten routines that they've worked with for years.

Why online writing groups charge money. Why do you need to charge money for people to join your group? They're not publishing services or editing services, they're just groups.
