That's the thing, though. Of course it won't matter to those fans, but what it DOES do is make something more difficult to criticize when it has objectively good writing. It's harder to say "I don't like this thing and it's bad" when it's pretty generally agreed that no, it's well-written, actually.

I just think that "objectively good writing" is a difficult thing to gage. Yes, there is a certain level of objectiveness to it, but there is also a whole lot of subjective. And I also think that these types of fans go in expecting to hate new things/things with more diverse characters and so set themselves up to hate it.

I personally think that while Star Trek Discovery does have some bad writing, for example, and I never much got into it, that Star Trek Academy is generally well written with at least a few episodes that have really good writing. But that is my personal opinion.

I also don't think there is ever going to be a whole lot of agreement on what is good vs. bad writing outside the extremes. There is general agreement usually on things that are the best and the worst, but there isn't a whole lot of agreement on anything inbetween.

Bro, it is not a coincidence that everything that had a diverse cast suffers from ‘bad writing’ because the people making that complaint can’t stand seeing non white characters in roles beyond background stock characters. Whether they realise they have this hang up or not.

Like take off the nostalgia goggles for so many beloved 90’s and 2000’s shows and so many of them are… not good.
