I think it's several factors...

1) A lot of people like a murder mystery.
2) It gives all the canon characters a way to work together and interact in interesting, amusing ways.
3) It has original character potential, potential to see other parts of the universe.
4) Low stakes in terms of canon character relationships, but still gives everyone something to do.

It's such a flexible, fun genre, that's why it goes so well with so many other genres. And to be fair, Northanger Abbey wasn't making fun of the mystery genre, but the gothic genre, which isn't exactly the same thing though there's some overlap.
