Because I live in a rural area and grew up in one, too. It’s 20 miles to town where all the stores are, especially the grocery stores. There is NO public transportation in the county, so it’s drive or starve. I started driving tractors when I was heavy enough to get the clutch down, and started driving the farm truck at 8. I had a farm license at 12 to drive our trucks on the highway. I dread when I’m too old to drive, because it’s going to make life hard.
I’m very glad you live somewhere with good transportation, but I don’t.
