Huh. I'm in the US and I had to write and present/defend a thesis for my undergraduate degree and so did my friends. I thought that was something everyone did as a part of their degree if they weren't in a major where they had some sort of project instead.

All my friends who went to state schools had to write a paper (~15-20 pages), no oral defense. It really annoyed me when my friends were complaining about 15 pages when that was a term paper for me, and my thesis was over 100. :(

Yeah, our thesis had to be at least 30-40 pages plus citations, and then we had to present/defend it to the department. 15 pages was a term paper, we were expected to write a couple of those per semester.
