I recently got into a new, reasonably popular ship (let's call it A/B). At first I was really excited. Right up until I realize that the sexual dynamics I had envisioned for A/B are totally incompatible with canon. To make matters worse for me, their canon sexual dynamics are also the only way B is comfortable with sexual intimacy at all, due to his CSA trauma. So unless I want to rewrite the way B is dealing with his CSA, I'm basically stuck.

I wish I could at least talk about this with someone, but everybody seems to love A/B's canon sexual dynamic, and I feel like talking about how I headcanon them differently would not be particularly welcome.

Note: By "sexual dynamics" I don't just mean who tops and who bottoms. It's more than just that.

Jusf write it and call it an AU! There are so many fic where people rewrite how characters deal with trauma, it isn't a new territory. But I don't know the fandom. I guess it could be a pretty toxic one where you'd get flamed for writing fic. Which sucks.

It's doable, but...hm. The thing about All For The Game is that it is fundamentally, through-and-through, a story about extreme trauma, and characters who manage to form attachments and feel safe with each other despite being wildly traumatized, guarded, and societally estranged.

Andrew's strict boundaries regarding intimacy, and Neil's immediate and unfailing acceptance and attentiveness to said boundaries, doesn't come into the story until the last third, but as soon as it does come into the story it kind of becomes definitive of their relationship, and rooted directly into the story's core themes in a way that makes it hard to extricate.

But even if I do decide to write what I want to read, I'll still be the only one writing it that way. Literally every other fic I've seen (out of hundreds) sticks close to their canon dynamic. Which is fine of course, but just kind of a bummer if it's not what one wants to read.

I firmly believe we are never the only one wanting something. Just because it hasntbeen written doesn't mean you are the only one wanting it!

I'm not familiar with canon but I am so curious now! Would you like to expand on the canon sexual dynamics and what they say about character, and why you would prefer your hc? I'm very curious!
