Ah, I remember that. We actually played Poohsticks as children. (Also racing raindrops on a window, which is from a different piece by the same author.)
Anyway, that’s a lovely image. People have told me to think about those thoughts as balloons that you can let go of and let float away. But I like this image even more.

Yeah, AA Milne definitely nailed some very common childhood experiences. I did grow up reading the books and his poems, but I think I loved them so much because they matched my sense of “playing pretend” and the other games we made up for ourselves.
