Yeah, this happened to me as well, and in the same fandom to boot!! So feel your pain.

*I feel your pain. Gah.

I wonder if it was the same beta.

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I hate those Failed Writer type betas. I had one that gave my characters entire paragraphs of purple dialogue (in the form of historic quotes, no less) and I'll never trust her with my fic again.

[identity profile] fireholly.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD WORST EVER

I'm so sorry you had to live through that.

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*sniffle*

Thank you. The therapy helped a lot.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 07:12 am (UTC)(link)
purple... dialogue?

whats that?

aka Purple Prose

[identity profile] singeaddams.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
But the Quincunx of Heaven runs low, and 'tis time to close the five ports of knowledge. We are unwilling to spin out our awaking thoughts into the phantasms of sleep, which often continueth precogitations; making Cables of Cobwebs and Wildernesses of handsome Groves. Besides Hippocrates hath spoke so little and the Oneirocriticall Masters, have left such frigid Interpretations from plants that there is little encouragement to dream of Paradise it self. Nor will the sweetest delight of Gardens afford much comfort in sleep; wherein the dullness of that sense shakes hands with delectable odours; and though in the Bed of Cleopatra, can hardly with any delight raise up the Ghost of a Rose. This is why you should never let anyone beta for you unless you trust them to not take it badly if you say 'nope, I'm doing it my way' regarding certain suggestions.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I never understand it when I hear people say things like this. A beta seriously rewrote parts of your fic? That is just bizarre. Stuff like this is why I rarely ever try to get a beta. :/

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a friend who did this to me once. Her grammar was worse than mine. D:

She did take it well when I told her 'no, hands off', though.

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's awful O.o That's likely why I didn't use a beta until 6 years into fandom... and used someone who's writing I really liked and judgment I trusted.

Finding a decent beta is bloody difficult at times.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
That doesn't always work. I handed my fic over to someone whose writing I really enjoy ... I can only assume she has a *really* good beta because she 'corrected' things that weren't wrong, changed character dialogue until it was ridiculously ooc, and added things like 'fast flowing' to 'river' when I had a character staring morosely into one, which is firstly totally a matter of taste as to whether you want to throw in extra adjectives (which I don't unless I think they really add something to the mood/imagery) and secondly in the case of this specific wide, sluggish river was wrong.

But I have always been lucky enough to have really good betas too. I only tried this specific person because I was in a rush. Good writing =/= good editing skills. It could just mean your beta rocks :D

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I didn't even think about that!

And yea, my beta does rock XD She is very picky about my weakness (passive voice), so she'll catch those and make recommendations on re-wording when I'm completely out of idas, and has some great ideas on how to expand the story (which added a whole new character, haha), so it's really great. I am a really slow writer, too, so it works with her busy schedule, haha XD

[identity profile] soymaid.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Shit, yo.

I wish I could get paid for beta-ing. I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to grammar, typos etc.

I guess some people proofread IRL but I have no actual qualifications.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
As an infrequent beta, I have to say, sometimes every SINGLE sentence in a fic is fucked up somehow. Passive voice, incorrect subject-verb agreement, impossible clauses (e.g. "burning down the church, he rode out of town"), etc. Sometimes a fic NEEDS to be totally rewritten.

That kind of thoroughness is what a lot of professional editors use, and as a writer I'm grateful for it, but it's why I only show my stuff to people I really trust. I also only end up using about 5%-10% of their suggestions.

idk, if you dislike the stuff she changed, just ignore those comments. Or make her use track changes next time.

[identity profile] mochalatt3.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Passive voice is not something that needs to be corrected, imo

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
You mean one doesn't have to correct passive voice?

[identity profile] mochalatt3.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, or even better "one doesn't need to correct passive voice" and we've gotten rid of a "to be" verb!!! When I was in hs we couldn't use any "to be" verbs in our writing (is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being, has, had, have, and on forever). Most people reverted to some form of Yoda-speak in order to get rid of the verbs because they're so common and natural, which is why I personally think it's matter of aesthetics and not grammar when it comes to removing things like "to be" verbs and passive voice. Sometimes sentences just sound better if you leave them alone. Trying to hard is usually very obvious.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I would show specific lines that had needless corrections made but I think the beta is a regular here. An example: "They can't stop our efforts now!" changed to "There's nothing to stop the efforts we're making now!" At least half of the "corrections" are like this.

Re: OP

[identity profile] mochalatt3.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that's horrible. Yea...get a new beta.

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen to this. If I change every sentence in something I'm beta-ing, then every sentence needs to be changed.

However, I do like to work with tracked changes, so the writer has the option of disagreeing. If it's something I think I need to go to the mattresses on, I'll let her know.

[identity profile] judo-creature.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea that the thanks was sarcastic, OP.
