As an infrequent beta, I have to say, sometimes every SINGLE sentence in a fic is fucked up somehow. Passive voice, incorrect subject-verb agreement, impossible clauses (e.g. "burning down the church, he rode out of town"), etc. Sometimes a fic NEEDS to be totally rewritten.

That kind of thoroughness is what a lot of professional editors use, and as a writer I'm grateful for it, but it's why I only show my stuff to people I really trust. I also only end up using about 5%-10% of their suggestions.

idk, if you dislike the stuff she changed, just ignore those comments. Or make her use track changes next time.

Passive voice is not something that needs to be corrected, imo

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
You mean one doesn't have to correct passive voice?

[identity profile] mochalatt3.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, or even better "one doesn't need to correct passive voice" and we've gotten rid of a "to be" verb!!! When I was in hs we couldn't use any "to be" verbs in our writing (is, am, are, was, were, be, been, being, has, had, have, and on forever). Most people reverted to some form of Yoda-speak in order to get rid of the verbs because they're so common and natural, which is why I personally think it's matter of aesthetics and not grammar when it comes to removing things like "to be" verbs and passive voice. Sometimes sentences just sound better if you leave them alone. Trying to hard is usually very obvious.

I would show specific lines that had needless corrections made but I think the beta is a regular here. An example: "They can't stop our efforts now!" changed to "There's nothing to stop the efforts we're making now!" At least half of the "corrections" are like this.

Wow, that's horrible. Yea...get a new beta.

Amen to this. If I change every sentence in something I'm beta-ing, then every sentence needs to be changed.

However, I do like to work with tracked changes, so the writer has the option of disagreeing. If it's something I think I need to go to the mattresses on, I'll let her know.
