You can call it "rape"--it's okay. That's what it is. And your kinks are your kinks either way. I don't like rape fics, but it's fiction and if that's someone's bag the fact that real rape can be a devastating thing doesn't make the consumer of rape fiction a bad person. The whole point of fantasy is that it's fantasy, not reality, and the real-world baggage does not have to attach.

[identity profile] jockchic.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the way you put that. Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Second.

[identity profile] jockchic.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll be honest, I read the book like fiction because I don't believe it actually happened. There's too much evidence against Carcaterra; I'm convinced it's about 95% fake. But I really admire that it affected you. I still write fics that contain rape, but I try to give the situation proper weight now thanks to "Sleepers." The movie changed me more than the book, though.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-09 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, before I finished the book my dad said he'd ruin it for me once I'd finished it, but before I had a chance to speak to him I watched the film (which actually affected me more than the book too; made me cry my eyes out at some parts tbqh), and found out from that that there wasn't much evidence to support what happened.
Whether some of what Lorenzo Carcaterra said was actually true, Idk, but it has still put me off reading rape fics for the time being.

Anyway, true or not, it's still a powerful story.

[identity profile] iiiskaaa.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I doubt there's anything I could read that would put me off rape porn.

[identity profile] soymaid.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and now I want to watch this movie.

Double :(

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I once thought I was put off rape completely because of something that happened (it wasn't rape), but... no. There's still enough of a difference between reality and fiction for me.

I haven't read the book though, but it sounds good if it affected you that much. I just hope for your sake you weren't really into non-con before.

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's actually the opposite for me. So much rape!fic is so badly written, with the characters and their reactions completely unrealistic and OOC, so it doesn't affect me at all; I roll my eyes and mock it, but that's it. It's so flippant, but so bad and non realistic that it doesn't affect me.

Really well-written fiction? Hits too close to home, especially if the rape is graphic. I read such books rarely, and even more rarely with fan fic.

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yay, Sleepers secret!

Personally, I think if anyone is truly turned on by the thought of rape -- real rape, not "oh please, no ... oh, yes" rape -- needs to have their head examined.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think you need to have your grammar examined.
Lol but seriously, I don't see why it's so hard to understand. Disregarding how horrible it is in real life, in erotic fiction rape is just another element which intensifies the situation. And it's just another fetish, so I think you're coming off as very judgmental and rude. I'll never understand why people have foot fetishes, but I'm not about to say they "need to have their heads examined" :/

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Plz to be pointing out the error, kthxbye.

It's not just another kink. It's not S&M. If you're turned on by really hurting somebody or by somebody really being hurt, yes, that's a problem.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
You are being stupid.

Look up:
sadism
masochism
rape fantasy
reality
fiction
imagination
kink
moron

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Good job, anonymous. Way to stand up for your beliefs! Insults are so very clever!

[identity profile] oflittlebrain.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Since you insist on being a condescending dickwad to anonymous users and disregarding their opinions entirely, I'll go ahead and put my account hat on. I only use this to comment on F!S as I'm not really in any livejournal fandoms, so whatever. I really want you to listen to me, because you are being very closed-minded and rude and I want to try to change this.

First of all, as I'm the first anon in this thread (yes there are two) I'll correct your sentence, like you requested:

I think anyone who is truly turned on by the thought of rape -- real rape, not "oh please, no ... oh, yes" rape -- needs to have their head examined.

Just a typo on your part, but I felt like snarking a little. Anyways, I'm sorry to say that you've missed this thread's point completely. I'm not turned on by anyone "really" hurting somebody or being hurt, I'm turned on by fictional characters who cannot actually have feelings/be hurt being in these situations. So are a lot of people. And if I wanted to enact some sort of rape fantasy in my actual sex life with a consenting partner, then that would, in fact, be classified as S&M. And as I'm a healthy individual who can differentiate between fantasy and reality and would never even think of being turned on by/enacting the real thing, I can assure you I do not need to get my head checked.

Like I was saying (and like you ignored completely), I'm not asking you to understand my kink, I'm just asking you not to judge me as mentally ill just for liking something that squicks you. :/

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean it as an insult. You really are being stupid. Or "ignorant," if you prefer:

ff you're turned on by really hurting somebody

This is the definition of sadism, for example.

(Believe it or not, there are even people who get turned on by really being hurt!)

But getting off on the idea of rape is not the same as getting off on the act of rape. Until you figure out the essential difference there, you're going to be a very unhappy and very tiresome person.

[identity profile] soymaid.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
There are many people who are turned on by really hurting or being hurt by other people. Generally these people are ethical and do not exercise this kink except in play or occasionally in limited actuality with consenting partners. It may be a problem, but everyone has some problems, and these are not resulting in any anyone being harmed, so your statement does come off as pretty judgmental even though I kind of agree.

Also you original post does contain an error. It says "if anyone is truly turned on by the thought of rape... needs to have their head examined".

No need to be so defensive It doesn't help your case.

[identity profile] oywidapoodles.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
IAWTC :(

I think most people should probably have their head examined though. Not an insult to most people, just that they're is almost always something that it would be useful to work through with a professional.

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
True. :)

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Meanwhile I once fapped to bad non-con gangrape Brad Renfro porn which was based on this movie. So I guess YMMV, lol.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
You should, um, tell me where I can find this.

That film broke my heart and made me cry harder than anything else. I couldn't sleep after watching it. I completely understand where you are coming from.
