This makes me all the more excited for this movie.

But...darn it, Pratchett! When I read 'seamstress' my mind went in the completely wrong direction. :/

[identity profile] karakael.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Oh noes! I have been Judged!

*goes and cries in a corner*

Oh, the shames of being a pervert.

[identity profile] saladzombie42.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
hahaha, my mind went there too :)

[identity profile] karakael.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not the only one! :D

Aurora's mother was still alive... D: She just ended up with two, uncredited lines.

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
She was?! ...Snap. Did any other Disney moms survive? Simba's mother was alive, but I can't think of any more besides that.

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well there was...

...no wait okay...

ummm

...

DUMBO'S MOM WAS STILL ALIVE.

[identity profile] 0o0f.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
IT HAS A LIVING MOM?

Looking even more forward to it now.

[identity profile] ainu-laire.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
God, about freaking time! It's been like, how many years since Sleeping Beauty? And the poor woman didn't even have a name...

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE THIS MOVIE EVEN MORE NOW. :D

Yes. I hate the dead mother troupe so much.

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Trope. A troupe is a group of performers, like a theatre troupe.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's good. Man, they're killing a lot of birds with one stone, aren't they--first one with a mother, first one from America, first black princess..well done, Disney. If a tad belated.

[identity profile] killerqueen42.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
There have been Disney films set in America before- Oliver and Company, Lilo And Stitch, The Rescuers off the top of my head... unless you meant first American Princess? Cause that is pretty awesome:) The setting is gonna rock, New Orleans in the Jazz Age, what could be better?

[identity profile] sherrilina.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I'm a little disturbed that, first time there's ever a black Disney princess, she turns into a freaking frog....

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
...if the first black princess had been cinderella, she would have been a slave. if she had been snow white, it would have been showing a happy servant girl to white dwarfs, with an absent father. sleeping beauty -- a black girl not raised by her parents, taken by three white women who think they know better. little mermaid -- black girl doesn't get on with her dad and runs off with the first guy she sees. beauty and the beast -- black girl endures abusive relationship because she loooooooooooves the guy. let's not even touch the mess they made of colorism/ethnicity and culture they made of aladin.

tl;dr: shit happens in fairy tales.

[identity profile] gidget-lawliet.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I can't wait to see this movie! <3

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know this until your secret. This is awesome to hear!

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, anon <3

a bit morbid...

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 07:11 am (UTC)(link)
i always liked that the mom was dead since it showed me that i could still live happily ever after even if my mom was dead. So much other media has the mom alive and so many girls had living moms with them so why did they need movie validation?

Re: a bit morbid...

[personal profile] thene 2009-12-08 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, anon. I'm in the exact same bind there but I feel the trope use of dead mothers is kind-of exploitative towards those of us who actually lost our mothers while we were still children. To me it's a little emotional fetish some media companies have and which has nothing to do with what it's really like growing up after your mother died.

But at the same time this secret has put a slightly bad taste in my mouth because it's saying 'yay, a princess who's like me & the majority of other people and not like you freaks! I feel so validated' which...LOL irony, I guess. The dead mother trope skeeves me, but I'd rather see some media that genuinely engages with maternal bereavement - with no fairy godmothers and no undeath fluff - than to have a media where all people grow up with two living parents (which is unrealistic anyway - half of all children go through some kind of family breakup before they're 18).

...

In the meantime, I'll be over here playing Metal Gear, I guess.

OP here
