Those were a lovely five minutes, yep.

I loved it when fic actually had plots, and was not about the porn and the slash. Heck I loved it when it was more character centric instead of ship centric.

Over the past eight years I would say that fanfiction = slash, not sure what started this trend or which fandom started it? LOTR? Harry Potter?

Not that I hate slash, I just miss fics that had plots, instead of porn no plots.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Trek perhaps?

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nahhh, since Egyptologists used to slash the hell out of the artwork they found on temples, it's pretty safe to say slash goes back farther than that.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhm,lol.
I was talking about fandoms but fair point.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure I've read that there were Sherlock Holmes fanworks around that were slashy well before Kirk/Spock. They just invented the term slash not the concept.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, its all about what section of fandom your in and what fandom. Fanfiction has been heavy slash and heavy romance since the Kirk/Spock zine days. There are Man from Uncle slash zines from when the show was still on the air. The time your thinking off? Has never existed, just your perception and awareness has changed.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...But there is plenty of slash that has plot. Long, detailed, plotty plots. Huuuuge tracks of plot. Why on earth do you think that slash shouldn't have a plot?

[identity profile] soymaid.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I love my slash with huuuuge tracts of.... plot.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right?

...Now I'm hideously tempted to make a reference to how I wrote this slash fic up from nothing. When I started here, all there was was gen fic. Other writers said I was daft to write slash in a gen fic area, but I wrote it all the same, just to show 'em. Or something. That might be taking things a bit too far, though.

[identity profile] soymaid.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hye man, my first slash fic sank into the swamp. I'm right there with you.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Please come join us in Doctor Who fandom, then.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-08 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, on second thought, don't because your conflation of "slash" and "porn" makes you sound like either a) a noob or b) a homophobe.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
ROFL, exactly - because there's never been an excess of het porn on fandom, has there? *G*

[identity profile] isisfrog.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was a nanosecond...wasn't there fanfic in the ancient world? (so my much smarter/geekier friend showed me once) ;D

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well technically any bard who ever made up his own twist on a legend was writing fanfiction.

And people have been slashing the Odyssey for centuries (admittedly it's canon - not surprising considering the era it comes from).

"Technically", no. "Fanfiction" derives from modern intellectual property law, being unlicensed derivative work of an owned property.

But you're right. Homer wrote Achilles/Patroclus slash. Shakespeare wrote Greek myth/English fairylore crossovers.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
So in your mind Sherlock Holmes fanfiction isn't fanfiction? Because no one owns the copyright to Holmes.

There doesn't have to be copyright law involved for something to be fanfiction. If you're writing something based on someone else's work it's fanfiction (or if you want to limit it a bit more doing so without their permission maybe)

There have been several academic articles talking about how fanfiction is merely the modern term for a kind of audience interactivity and storytelling that has been around forever. It may not be your personal definition, but that doesn't stop it being a perfectly valid one.

no one owns the copyright to Holmes

Reportedly the reason Star Trek: The Next Generation went four seasons between the episodes Elementary, My Dear Data and its followup Ship in a Bottle is that the Doyle family does still have prerogatives on the characters and negotiations were required before they could be used a second time.

Yes, it's true that the usage of the word "fanfiction" is evolving and broadening. Still the word originally came into being to mean soemthing that we'd never needed a word for before, i.e. "unlicensed derivative work of an owned property". Or it'd just have been called "pastiche" or "sequel" or by any of a number of then-existing words.

If you got into fanfiction once the internet had come along, instead of in 1971 when I did, maybe.
