These halcyon days of no porn and magic rainbow unicorns never existed. It varies heavily from fandom to fandom (I follow a series that has fewer than ten pornographic stories online) but it has always existed and will always exist.

Also if you think fanfic was much more high-quality ten or fifteen years ago I seriously question your memory.

I've been active in fandom nearly ten years, and at least in the fandoms in which I participated, it's always been (mostly) all porn, (most) all the time.

ha! no. More isolated maybe, but it was always there.

I think the issue is that there were always a certain number of specific fandoms that tended to be slashy. Ten years ago, you had fandom, you had fanfic mailing lists. But there were specific fandoms, to name a few, Sentinel, Due South, Xena, Highlander, and Star Trek TOS, where it was mostly slash, and the rest it was mostly gen. Nowadays every fandom is all about the slash!

Also it seems that the younger fic writers nowadays write and are in fandom just for slash, something you didn't see as much of ten years ago.


I'm not anti slash, just stating some observations.

I think fandom is more slashfriendly than it once was, but I take a high objection to your "I miss the time when things were gentastic!" somehow equating "I miss the time when there was no slash!" No slash =/= gen. Honestly.

Seems to me that there's just as much gen as there used to be, it's just that fandom has gotten larger and the slash friendly portion has grown faster than either the het or gen portions.

Pretty much any time you have two characters with chemistry, you'll find a shipping base for them. In this case, I wouldn't blame the fans nearly so much as blaming TPTB that emphasize slashtastic relationships over gen ones. In most of my fandoms, slash only becomes really popular when there's a lack of developed female characters or when they don't have chemistry with the male characters. When the ratio of male to female characters is relatively equal - and I'm referring here to the ones with growth and development - then slash doesn't seem to overwhelm the fandom. Or so it's been in my experience, anyway.

Well, this trip down fandom porn history has been fun. :P

I started in fandom in 1998, with the X-Files. The big thing there was shipper vs. noromo vs. fencer. UST was big. Slash had a solid following, though at that point I was too young to "get" it. There was plenty of porn, there was plenty of gen. *shrug*

But a thought...maybe there's more slash now because people are more honest about their sexuality/not bogged down by shame to ship same-sex pairings. Maybe it's an experiment ground for some people with questions about their sexuality. Just something that came to me...
