Before your time, apparently. In the days before LJ, when most fic was on mailing lists and individual archives, gen was (at least in the fandoms I frequented) the most common sort of fic you'd find- or at least neck and neck with shippy het stuff. Slash wasn't something you ran into often, you had to actively go looking for it.

I was subscribed to numerous mailing lists and it was all pretty much porn. Maybe it's a fandom-specific thing?

Possibly. There was plenty of porn to be had, don't get me wrong (spent a load of my teen years reading it), but I don't remember it being *nearly* as prevalent as it is these days. You didn't have to hunt through a whack of fic to find something where sex wasn't the main plot in some way.

Yes, in the olden days of fandom, you had to actively seek it out, and in most fandoms the fics revolved around plots, not sex.

Yeah, you had to lie about your age for two or three page clicks before you got the goods. Now you just filter to 'M' at the Pit and you get crapload of explicit stuff and to hell with their rules. There are also a whole fuckload more people in fandom than there were ten or fifteen years ago..

There were a fuckload more, and they tended to be a bit more vigilant about who got onto the "adults only," mailing lists, and chatrooms.

M used to actually mean M, at one point - I got an upload ban back in 2002 for posting an explicit sex scene on the Pit, but that was JUST after they'd done the Great Porn Kick and deleted their entire NC-17 section, so~
