When exactly was that?

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, it happened gradually over the past 6 or seven years I would say. When fandom was primarily on Yahoo Groups, there was less slash, and fandom from my view was less slash centric. 6,7,8 years ago there was loads of shipper fic, but it was mostly het, and the rest of the fic tended to be gen.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Because I was around before Yahoo Groups (hell, before E-groups and Onelist) and most of what I saw was porn. And all of it was slash.

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Where were *you* hanging out? I never saw any of that stuff.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I can remember it being on E-groups, and whatever was before e groups, and in certain fandoms slash was rare.

Nowadays, if there is fanfiction, there is slash, and there has to be a main slash pairing!

ONELIST. That's what egroups ate.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, we were all reading different mailing lists, it happens. Just because you haven't seen it in your fandoms doesn't mean there was a porn shortage.

[identity profile] joereaves.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
This. I first discovered porny fanfic - both slash and het - when I was at uni. I'm 33 now. And I've read zines from much much much earlier that had PWP fic in all flavours. The OP is deluded if s/he thinks there wasn't just as high a percentage of porny fic around long before s/he ever found fandom.

Also just because a fic has porn doesn't mean it can't have plot. I'm in the middle of writing a long plotty fic and I just wrote 5000 words of porn in the middle of it. Most of the really long fic that I like best has a nice mixture of plot and sex.

I was a huge fandom hopper back in the 90s. X-Files was my first online fandom (this was... 1997, I guess), but by the time mailing lists emerged ('99-2002), I was into due South, the Sentinel, Highlander and those are just the ones I spent a lot of time in.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Sentinal and Highlander were well known fandoms, but they were always slash fandoms.

Aaw, e-groups! I can't remember the last time I saw a reference to them!

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
6,7,8 years ago there was loads of shipper fic, but it was mostly het, and the rest of the fic tended to be gen.

Sorry, but right now it seems that you don't have problems with porn and shipper fics but with slash porn and shipper fics.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Porn no plot and shipper fic tends to be my issue, I usually don't care if it is slash or het.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
This. Oh, those nasty, perverted slashers, in ur fandomz screwin it up. *sigh* Not this again.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, I was in the Sailor Moon fandom back in the early 90s, and the fic was mostly femmeslash and porn.

So almost 20 years now, at least.

Annnnnd now I feel old.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. There was a decent amount of gen fic in the areas that I hung out in the Sailormoon fandom, but the femmeslash was plentiful. Except for Haruka/Usagi, my OTP. Alas. It did have a high percentage of het though, primarily with Usagi/Mamoru but also later with Usagi/Seiya (which should theoretically count as femmeslash as well, but people weren't usually writing it as such).

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
lol n00b to fandom.

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Before your time, apparently. In the days before LJ, when most fic was on mailing lists and individual archives, gen was (at least in the fandoms I frequented) the most common sort of fic you'd find- or at least neck and neck with shippy het stuff. Slash wasn't something you ran into often, you had to actively go looking for it.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I was subscribed to numerous mailing lists and it was all pretty much porn. Maybe it's a fandom-specific thing?

[identity profile] threnody.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Possibly. There was plenty of porn to be had, don't get me wrong (spent a load of my teen years reading it), but I don't remember it being *nearly* as prevalent as it is these days. You didn't have to hunt through a whack of fic to find something where sex wasn't the main plot in some way.

(Anonymous) 2009-12-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, in the olden days of fandom, you had to actively seek it out, and in most fandoms the fics revolved around plots, not sex.

Exactly, and the way it is now, slash is what you find primarily!

[identity profile] soymaid.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
You icon + the phrase "before your time" = I'm now reading your posts as Santa in my head.

"Slash wasn't something you ran into often, kiddies. Now who wants gen for Christmas?"

[identity profile] starza.livejournal.com 2009-12-07 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Back in the late 90s (Around 97-98ish), I remember a lot of fic being either gen fic or het fic or fic that had pairings, but they weren't the main focus. There was rarely, if ever, any slash. And this was for video games like FFVII, which right now, is pretty much loaded with slash fics.

Then again, all I read was video game fanfiction, mostly FFVI-FFVIII fanfiction. So maybe it varies from fandom to fandom. It's kinda funny to see how much slash has grown from the FFVII and FFVIII fandoms compared to back then.

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2009-12-08 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember the same time period and finding tons of slash porn for the exact same fandoms.

It all depends on what parts of fandom you were hanging out in. Just because the people you knew wrote plotty gen stuff doesn't mean the whole fandom did.
