I'd read some of that genfic - most of them was pretty much slash in denial.

Nah, not really. There was even a (pretty fun) fanfic parodying this tendency. And this was pre-Internet stuff.

I don't know who you are, but it looks like you have been in fandom roughly as long as I have. One issue you have to consider is that there is now a generation of fic writers who are writing fanfiction only for the slash.

I just miss the days when people wrote good, gen fic. Nowadays the only fic which is written is porn, and when people go into fandom, they do it because they have a "ship," which they look for fic about.

Please don't generalise across all fandoms. Not every fandom is like this.

Though I have no idea how people define gen any more. If there's a canon couple and they're an established couple in the fic, but the fic isn't *about* them being a couple, is that gen? If so, I have have read many, many plotty gen fics in my fandom.

Not every fandom? Not every part of every fandom. Not every fan. Not every fan all the time.

THINGS WERE NOT BETTER IN THE PAST. YOU'RE JUST MORE AWARE NOW. Why is this such a mind-bogglingly hard concept?

Do you mean smarm? Because the first fics I wrote were classic "just because we kiss, and pledge eternal love, and reject all attention from the opposite sex doesn't make us gay!" smarm.

Yeah, some of them were like that. But in many stories there was no kiss and (open) pledges of love - in exchange, the h/c stuff was pretty much emotional porn. They didn't have sex, let alone make love, but one of them would get hurt (to protect the other, of course) and then the uninjured party would feel worried and be all "omg what would I do without you, you are my life" and so on and so forth, and it would provide them with an excuse to get physically close and emotionally intimate without being, well, "gay." And of course they just dripped with UST. They were pretty obviously love stories without all the "dirty" physical aspects of love.

tl;dr: I'm not really a fan of old-school slash (I come from a different side of fandom and I'm just not into realism-über-alles and justifying stuff), but I actually liked a lot of those stories because I totally get where they came from. I've always had a huge thing for UST and back when I just started to ship stuff (without actually being in fandom, I had no access to it at the time) I was all about the zomg pure platonic feelings and passionate male friendships, but I couldn't have imagined them actually having sex. (Kissing, well. No tongues. :D) But then my tastes changed and while I'm still big into UST and all that, I like slash/BL as well. :D
