Can you explain the point? Why write about, you know, VAMPIRES, as humans?? So they can go to the beach??

The point? To tickle the fancy of the author and entertain the readers to which the premise appeals. Some people just like the idea of what could happen with certain characters if the circumstances were different. I didn't understand it when I first stumbled about AH fics, either...but I read some really great stories by really great authors, and it converted me.

That's not to say bad!fic doesn't exist for this subgenre, because LORDY does it ever. But that's pretty much standard for any fandom anywhere, isn't it?

I've actually thought a lot about older fandoms recently, and how I never dabbled into AUs in reading or writing, because it doesn't appeal to me personally. It's different with this fandom.

Why? I think, with these characters, it's, well, the characters. There are certain scenarios that appeal. I haven't written enough all-human to tell you what one does or doesn't allow for me as a writer; of the 51 stories I've written for the BtVS fandom over the last seven years, only three have been all-human fics, and with one exception, those were written recently as I start drifting toward original work. All I can tell you is I've read many all human stories with interesting, different premises and the ones that worked really worked, and the ones that didn't fell flat. You'd have to take a larger sampling of AHAU authors to get a solid answer.

I'm goig to guess it has a lot to do with how completely all characters and possible situations have been mined in a fandom that's been around for so long and, unless you read the comics, has had no new canon content to go off of for nearly ten years. It would just give you something new to do with them.
