To add a bit to this though, I don't know if toning down the implications has anything to do with any TERFs specifically or generally, because it's been a thing for years now for adaptations to tone down the tomboyishness of female characters, and new things to shy away from making girls as boyish as they used to be able to be. One example I can think of off the top of my head is the 00's movie of Bridge to Terabithia. Great adaptation, and I can understand removing the subplot about Leslie looking and dressing like a boy, but they still could have given her that look in the movie. There's an older home video version from the 80's or 90's that does a better job with that.
