OP here. Some people expressed concern, bringing up some well-known wank where people took self-shipping too far. I'm familiar with Snapewives, and my selfship fandom activity with this character is nowhere near that extreme.

I am well aware the character I self ship with isn't real; there's no channeling or seances with the character here.

The extent of my selfship is writing Y/N and self-insert fanfiction, drawing the character with me, and fantasizing about raunchy scenarios.

Y'know. Typical cringy fandom stuff. Only instead of shipping with an existing character, it's with a slightly modified version of myself that fits into canon.

I do have some self-esteem issues that has been present long before I self-shipped with this character, as well as issues with doomscrolling. Like feeling like I need to learn every possible counterargument to something I feel strongly about to feel secure. And this fandom doomscrolling was still better than political doomscrolling, lol.

I also recently accepted I'm queer, but live in a red state, so this feels like a safe way to explore that.

Mainly in posting this, I was hoping for some advice and experience on the constant comparison to others' work/doomscrolling.

I think the moral panic this stirred up over selfshipping specifically being the issue is unwarranted, coming mostly from a misinterpretion of the concept based on some extreme examples.

It makes me think of how Redditors will express disgust at all slash shippers just because of a handful who center their lives around it and harass those who ship other pairings as a form of social justice. While ignoring the ones who simply vibe and have fun imagining dynamics as a hobby.
