I think this is one of the reasons I like the show Bojack Horseman so much. The show has the reoccurring messages of "You are still responsible for the horrible shit you did during a spiral,""Trauma/substance abuse explains your actions, but doesn't excuse them," and most importantly, "The people in your life have every right to decide that you're too toxic for them to handle and cut you off, and they aren't bad people for doing so."

It's something I wish I saw more in fiction, especially when it comes to all these male protagonists everyone makes excuses for because "they're so tortured or traumatized." And how often female characters are on the receiving end of the abuse from tortured male characters then get depicted as selfish when they decide, "Enough is enough," and leave the guy.

Y'see it in the real world. Ariana Grande broke up with Mac Miller because she couldn't handle his drug addiction anymore, then when he OD'd, she was blamed for his death because "she abandoned him when he needed her most."

That really made me mad. I'm not even a fan of Ariana, but how dare people blame her for her ex boyfriend's actions.
