Cliffhanger episode endings seem less impactful in the bingewatching era; I understand that it promotes the click-the-next-episode and keep engagement high model of streaming, but when one doesn't have to wait and speculate about the resolution of the cliffhanger - when there's no reason to engage on any deeper level or perform any sort of analysis in anticipation - it feels like it cheapens the experience.

secret because i feel like this is assigning too much emotional weight and significance to entertainment :(

Ooo yeah, good observation Secret OP. I notice how cheap a cliffhanger feels if I can instantly get to the next episode these days.

There was a really good show I watched on Netflix, but what I didn't like about the show were the cliffhanger endings to the episodes. It was always a seemingly big cliffhanger only to have said cliffhanger resolved as a nothing burger within the first 5 minutes of the next episode. If it didn't happen with nearly every episode for all 3 seasons (season 1 did this the most), I probably wouldn't have noticed or been annoyed with it.

There have been a lot of not-as-good shows I've watched that do the same thing. Few are effective
