I feel like almost all of my tastes are really common and popular, and that extends to fandoms, too. I'm not a big fan of anything that's not widely popular. All of my fandoms are large, most of them are huge. I do read/listen to/watch/play some stuff that isn't super popular, but the fandoms I get really involved in are always the giant ones.

I hate feeling like such a basic bitch.

Hmmm, on the other hand, you'll never run out of fic for your faves or have trouble meeting fandom friends who share your tastes, right? Being in a big, active fandom is really fun. Taste is subjective, if you genuinely like the fandoms you do, there's nothing wrong with it, no matter if they're popular or very obscure.

+1

I get the stigma against being “too basic”, but as someone frequently on the other side of this, there are real drawbacks to having less popular tastes, even in the internet age. The times when I’ve managed to be into a popular thing, in the same way that many other fans are, it can be really fun.

Exactly! I tend to ship rare pairs and get into small fandoms, so when I end up liking a popular fandom and ship I'm quite happy. So much fic and art, so many headcanons, so many people who share my feelings. I get why they would feel insecure about being basic but I'm rather envious of OP!

There's no shame in that, you like what you like and that's okay.

I usually end up in more medium fandoms myself but I do tend to have a habit of shipping the most popular, or a still very popular, ship. So I'm kind of in the same boat but my fic-reading choices might be a little less, oh no, how will I live.

But don't feel bad about it at all, the things you love are popular for a reason. A lot of people like them!

This is often me. The other times I end up in popular fandoms still, just with somewhat less popular ships.

Eh, you like what you like. No shame in it. I mean, here I am, still rocking a Spike icon after all these years 'cause Spike is still muh boy, you know?
Fuck it, OP, you do you. :D

Do you have any idea how much it sucks to get excited to read a self insert five paragraph fic because it’s the first new fic in your fandom in eight years?!

I’m in a popular fandom right now and holy shit it’s awesome! Like, I have people to talk to! And fic to read! And omg the art is to die for! Why can’t I like all the popular fandoms?!

Seriously I think there are so many positives and really the only negative is that you’re measuring yourself against an imaginary scale and deciding you aren’t something enough. We like what we like. Enjoy the stuff you enjoy and don’t let anyone else real or imagined take that from you.

My friend is like that. Frankly, I am jealous.
Some fandoms are way too annoying, but still there are always fics, other fans, merch, fanart etc etc

And me. I find the rarest most obscure pairings even in a big fandoms as a usual.
